The Pioneer :: Home : >> Prithivi II user trial likely on Sept 24

Preparations are underway to conduct user trial of Prithivi-II from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here. The test is likely to be held on September 24.

The missile, which is about nine metres in length and one metre in width, can carry conventional as well as nuclear warheads and has a range of 350 km. It is one of five missiles being developed under the Integrated Missile Development Programme.

In the current programme, the missile would be tested for a 320-km range, while earlier on June 18 the test for 273 km had been conducted, informed sources. According to sources in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the tests would be part of the user trials, which were conducted by a special contingent raised by the Army from LC-III.

Prithvi-II is capable of carrying a payload of between 500 kg and one tonne, including nuclear weapons. The nuclear-capable missile has already been inducted by the armed forces and is handled by the Army units attached to the strategic force command's special group, the sources further said.

. . . .
Whats the purpose of this test?

User trials of P2 have been already been undertaken in the past and they have been successful.

Any technological improvements in this one?

They are testing it for increased range.

Are you sure on this.

I had read, the range of P2 can be increased to 350 kms by varying its payload.

Maybe, this 320 kms would be existing payload OR alternately it is alos possible that this one could be utilizing improved control systems.
