Presumed dead in Indo-Pak war, Punjab sepoy ‘alive’ in Oman jail

Presumed dead in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Sepoy Jaspal Singh is reportedly alive and at present lodged in a jail in Oman.

A carpenter, Sukhdev Singh, who recently returned from Oman, claims to have met Jaspal Singh in the Masira Island jail. Sukhdev worked in the jail kitchen for 10 days. Sukhdev’s claims have given hope to Jaspal’s family, which is now making efforts to get in touch with him.

Sukhdev, a resident of Dubri, Boormajra in Chamkaur Sahib, said Jaspal approached him after recognizing him as a Punjabi. “We got talking and he asked me about my village. He also asked me about some of his relatives whom I knew. Jaspal told me that he was captured on December 4 from Ferozepur border. He and five other prisoners of war (PoWs) were kept in a Pakistan jail and some six years later shipped to Oman,” Sukhdev said.

Talking about Jaspal, Sukhdev said that he is now 70 years old bust maintains good health. “Meeting Jaspal was a chance encounter. He told me there was one more prisoner who was from the regiment. Two others were shifted a few years back,” Sukhdev said.

Jaspal reportedly belonged to 15 Punjab Regiment. His family has now approached Ex-Servicemen Grievances Cell to get in touch with Jaspal. An application has also been moved with Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh. The family also claims to have approached Shiromani Akali Dal leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia.

Jaspal’s wife Baljit Kaur, 65, said she often communicated with the wives of other missing soldiers but never received any reports about her husband being alive. “We presumed he was dead and accepted this as fate,” she said.

Jaspal’s son Kamaljit Singh was three when he went missing. “I do not remember much about my father. The news was so unexpected. Since then we have approached all authorities seeking help to get in touch with my father. These have not borne any fruit till now,” he said.

Meanwhile, president of the Ex-Servicemen Grievances Cell, Lt Col (Retd) S S Sohi said they have verified Sukhdev’s story from Commanding Officer of 15 Punjab Regiment, Lt Col A S Cheema who confirmed that there was an attack on the regiment at Hussainiwala Border on December 3, 1971. Three officers, JCOs and ORs had gone missing or were reported killed. Sohi says that there could be other POWs lodged in different places and the government should take action to trace them.

i hope he will return home sooner.

I don't understand why this damn arabic goon country like oman is having Indian prisnors....... oman has nothing to do with 1971 war.

Now i understand that pakistan does not have enough resources to properly feed its prisnors that's why they are shifting them to diff countries.

.
India Should at once bring him and Oman Diplomat should be called and asked why India was not informed about the prisoner...Now we should ask Gulf government to send us the list of foreign nationals held up in their jails.

Shame on Oman....

I dont understand why both GOI & GOP cannot come clean on this one issue .

Soldiers from both sides did what was expected of them . After so long what malice can anyone hold against them except perhaps the embarrassment of admitting that they did exist and Govts on both sides lied.

Govts grant a general amnesty to all kinds of ppl, why can they not grant one to each other on this issue alongwith an assurance that media will not be permitted to raise a stink on the conditions of POWs.

Just let these soldiers go home.

elites who consider soldiers as their slaves never care about them.they like true master even make money from the dead bodies of slave soldiers best example coffin scam.Even after war is over slave soldiers suffer and elites of warring countries go back to their mauj masti.

You understand this, you saw financial papers? What if grandpa soldier is lying and there other circumstances to him landing up in Oman?

For decades Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis have been coming to Oman illegally in cramped up ships. Oman is extremely strict against illegal immigration and punishes people severely for it.

Such issues will not be solved by flying off the handle.

What if he isnt lying ?

To resolve this issue before the men die in a far off land we need to come clean - both Indian & Pakistanis.

Sending off POWs to a distant Muslim country by Pak is a possibility while incarcerating them in Indian prisons under a different name is something that can be easily done.

Lets see this from a Soldiers POV and that of his family not as a my country Vs Yours.

Not only oman every country should be strict for illegal immigration.

But i don't find any relation between Illegal immigration & a war soldier.

My question is that how a Indian soldiers is founded in a Oman jail instead of pakistani jail ???????

There is a real possibility that this soldier went AWOL and deserted during the war. I can't understand why Pakistan would send captured Indian prisoners to Oman. This is completely frivolous.

Are you asking me how he could imaginably go there?

If I was to tout out a random guess - He was never captured, he fled to Oman. Unless there was something special about him being wanted by Oman. Let the Oman government first answer for him, then we'll answer.

India has a good relationship with Oman these days. If there is any truth to this I expect this matter to be sorted quickly.

War prisoner and that too from Pakistan shifted to Oman, no ways. They dont keep even illegal immigrants in jail for more than a month. Their relation with India is/was always good. Indeed Oman is the only country in gulf which is so close to India with Indian citizens being given citizenship and the ruler doing his military training in NDA. So something is not right with the story. need to wait for the real full version.

The truth is hard to digest but when it comes to Muslims they will all side with each other against other non muslim countries. Sad but true.
