The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has awarded its most prestigious award for international cooperation to Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Pakistan’s former minister for science & technology.
“This award has been announced in recognition of tremendous efforts made by Prof Atta-ur-Rahman in building strong collaborations with China in the field of science and technology,” said an official of the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University.
“It was due to his efforts that the president of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof Chunli Bai, visited Pakistan for the first time in the history of Pakistan, along with a 15-member delegation of eminent scientists last year.”
The award was given away to the scientist at a ceremony held in Beijing on January 10, 2014. A large number of collaborations have been initiated between Pakistan and China due to the efforts of Prof Rahman, who is also former chairman of the Higher Education Commission.
His book entitled ‘The Wondrous World of Science’ has been translated into the Chinese language and will be published for mass distribution in China in 2014.
Candidates selected for the award are those who have made outstanding contributions to promoting the establishment of strategic partnerships between foreign scientific institutions, universities, enterprises, or international academic organisations with CAS.
