he Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is likely to vote for Nawaz Sharif during his election as prime minister in the National Assembly next week, but the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) will definitely not.

A top PPP leader told The News that his party was likely to vote for Nawaz Sharif, who would in any case be elected as prime minister with a thumping majority. “We will not be opposing him unnecessarily.”

He said that way back in March 2008 the PML-N extended its backing for the unchallenged election of Yusuf Raza Gilani as the prime minister. At the time, all parliamentary forces voted for him.

“It is absolutely certain that we will not support Nawaz Sharif, and we can’t due to our clear policy,” a senior PTI leader, however, told The News before going into the inaugural meeting of his party’s parliamentary group.

The obvious PTI decision rules out the possibility of unanimous election of Nawaz Sharif. It is obviously improbable for the PTI to opt for the PML-N chief considering the aggressive views of its Chairman Imran Khan against him since long. However, the two sides have stopped an aggressive exchange of bitter words against each other after the May 11 elections.

PTI has repeatedly declared that it would prove in the National Assembly that it was the real opposition and give the government a tough time on key issues.

While the PPP is inclined to reciprocate the five-year old PML-N gesture, the strategy of its ally, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which is the fourth largest group in the National Assembly with 18 seats, is not yet clear.

Immediately after the announcement of the poll results, MQM chief Altaf Hussain offered a unique backhanded “congratulation” to Nawaz Sharif, but a few days later also lauded the PML-N president’s “balanced” approach towards certain national issues particularly terrorism.

But still there is a possibility that the MQM may go with the PPP if the latter decided to vote for Nawaz Sharif.

On the eve of the election of the prime minister, there is no coordination, not even minor contacts, between the two main opposition blocs, the PPP and PTI, to follow a joint strategy. There is so much hatred between them mainly due to Imran Khan’s attacks on the PPP that no meeting point seems on the cards.

A split opposition would be advantageous for the ruling coalition as it would not get the tough time that it could face if the opposition groups are united.

The lone member of the Awami Muslim League (AML), Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, who owes his victory from Rawalpindi after a long time to PTI’s assistance, is likely to stand with Imran Khan against Nawaz Sharif in the latter’s election as prime minister.

At present, the PTI has 28 seats in the National Assembly with the exclusion of the reserved women’s seats. With the inclusion of the solitary AML seat, they have a total of 29 votes.

All the other parliamentary groups are expected to back Nawaz Sharif. They include Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulemae Islam (JUI) with 10 seats, PML-Functional with five seats, Pukhtoonkhwa Awami National Party and Jamaat-e-Islami with three seats each, Awami National Party with two seats, PML-Zia with one seat etc.

I don't understand this process. What difference does it make if PTI votes for Nawaz or not? He already has the majority. Why would the opposition vote for him anyway
