PPP and PML-N agree to cease fire

ISLAMABAD: The PPP and the PML-N have reached an accord under which the former has assured the latter of doing away with the 17th Amendment and in return the PML-N has promised to support President Asif Ali Zardari in the current political crisis.

According to sources in the presidency, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani apprised president on Monday of the outcome of his meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Lahore earlier in the day.

Mr Gilani informed the president that the PML-N had promised to support the PPP in the situation that has arisen after the scrapping of the National Reconciliation Ordinance.

A marked difference was observed in the stance of the PML-N after the Lahore meeting.

‘We have never demanded resignation of President Zardari and we don’t want any confrontation at this stage,’ PML-N secretary general Ahsan Iqbal said.

‘We believe that in the present circumstances the president is the best judge to decide whether or not he should resign,’ he said.

He said the PML-N had always urged the PPP to fulfil the commitments it had made in the Charter of Democracy.

‘If the PPP fulfils its commitments, addresses people’s problems and ensures good governance we will not demand any change.’

A PPP leader said: ‘Our leadership believes that the fresh stance of the opposition party is a big achievement and will provide further strength to the government to face different challenges.’

PML-N leader Siddiqul Farooq also issued a statement which said: ‘Our party’s position is that Zardari should not resign.’

He said the PML-N believed that President Zardari enjoyed immunity under Article 248 the Constitution and no case could be reopened against him.

A source in the presidency said: ‘The ruling party is confident that attempts to derail the democratic system can be foiled by forging unity among political parties.’

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar termed the statements of PML-N leaders in support of President Zardari a significant development in the current political situation.

I have always said that majority of Pakistanis don't trust or like Zardari. His presence at top of PPPP and in the President's house are only adding more fuel to the fire of political instability of Pakistan.

A few days ago I commented that Zardari must go, quite frankly I was hoping, like majority of the Pakistanis, that Zardari will now resign and we will have a strong PM in Gillani.

PML-N was also asking for Zardari's resignation but now this stance must be a shocker for everyone.

This is one of the reasons that I have serious doubts over the capabilities of Nawaz Sharif as a politician. I am sure office managers, everyday SAAS-BAHU and other ordinary Pakistanis can do better politics.

I say lets throw both Zaradri and Nawaz Sharif out.

Both parties agree for this because both had to take advantage from each other. PPP apparent and PML-N hidden. One of these unpublic advantages maybe the increase in the rights of Chief Minster by taking some of rights from the Governor.

These politicians get together for there own benefits but do not see what worst is happening to the nation. To the common man, these alliances are of no use. First of all there was no flour, no sugar, no nothing. Now we have no Gas now to hot our stoves. People reach offices without having breakfast, CNG the most efficient and cheap fuel being used by almost 70% of common man is not available, Electricity is not to be found, we don't have security of life, incertainity is at its peak and when SC has decided to take severe actions against those who are resposible for corruption, PML-N agrees to cease fire.

Cease fire means not saying bad to what in reality is bad.

Disappointment prevails, hope extincts. Pessimism lives, people die. Corrupt ruling, country declining. Welcome to Pakistan.

This might seem a silly problem but believe me what it feels when you have to spend a long day without anything to stay active and charged. You may not go to the casual restaurants or hotels for the same is the condition there, in high class hotels pocket doesn't permit.

The only redeemer of this country can only be a person belonging to a poor background, who has lived here, and faced the worst. These imported, dual-nationality holder people are of no use.

It is not a silly problem rather a common problem these days. My freinds and cousins have faced the same issue. Hang in there bro, people will rule and these good for nothing people will be kicked out insha-Allah.

I think the PML-N made the correct decision. especially in the face of the PPP's refusal to speak out against Zardari.

Legally Zardari is under no obligation to resign, nor is his election as President, at this point, unconstitutional. The cases against him were never proven, so should he not be considered 'innocent till found guilty'?

I agree that he has shown himself to be a horrible leader, and his policies have in general been unpopular and poor, but we cannot superimpose that desire to see him gone on the basis of policies we disagree with on top of the SC's NRO decision that does not call for Zardari to step down or declare his position as President as unconstitutional in any way.

In the absence of any legal reason for Zardari to resign, this decision should be left up to the PPP, on whether they consider their leader's ability to lead as being compromised with the distraction of the NRO.
