(CNN) -- Police in Pakistan raided an Islamic religious school Monday and found 50 students chained to one another and being held in an underground room.

Video footage from the madrassa showed young men and boys -- some appearing to be as young as 8 years old -- with heavy chains connected to their ankles.

According to details reported by CNN affiliate GEO news, police conducted the raid at the Islamic school in Sohrab Goth -- a suburb of Gadap in Karachi -- after sources told Gadap police officers of children kept in an underground dungeon.

Police said the students reported they were beaten and shocked with electric wires.:angry:

It was not immediately clear why the students were being kept in such conditions, or how long they had been there. The school's imam was taken into custody for questioning, police said.

Speaking to GEO news, Gadap police official Rao Anwar said the majority of the children were from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of North West Pakistan.

The students were enrolled in the madrassa by their parents to be religiously trained. Police said parents were unaware of the conditions their children were kept in.

Pakistan: Students in Islamic school chained, beaten

Karachi: Around 50 children, locked up in chains, were rescued by Pakistani police following a raid on a religious seminary, which officials fear was forcing militant training on them.

Senior police officials said the children apparently were being prepared for some illegal and extremist activities at the seminary.

During the raid in the notorious Sohrab Goth area of Karachi yesterday, police personnel recovered the children from a basement where they were chained.

“The police carried out a full-fledged raid on a tip-off on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Sindh. During the raid the main person at the seminary, Qaqi Usman was arrested while search is on for the others involved in mistreating the children,” the DIG east said.

“Most of the children were in chains and are in bad condition,” the official said.

Interior minister Rehman Malik said the police had been told to investigate thoroughly if the seminary had any link to the Tehreek-e-Taliban and if the children were being imparted terrorist training.

Television channels showed the children being led out of the seminary which is located adjacent to a mosque.

“We were kept in chains and hung upside down and beaten with sticks if we didn’t comply. We were told that we would be given training to fight in Afghanistan,” a boy was quoted as saying.

Another boy said some Taliban members had visited the seminary and led prayers and told them to prepare for battle.

Police said the seminary supervisors did not allow parents to interact with their children, most of whom were brought to Karachi from far-flung areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province, which is a hotbed of Taliban activities.

“What we have learnt is that the parents used to pay around 10,000 per month to the seminary for the education of their children who were sent to Karachi to get religious education,” a police official said.

Preparing innocent children to kill themselves(and most likely other innocent people), the men who did this should not get out of jail.. ever.

Der Spiegel
also reported ( German Source ) that some of the children were addicted to drugs or mentally handicapped...
Preying on the weakest members of society.. so typical for Religion.

The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach.
