Police on high alert in Maoist-hit dists

KORAPUT: Security has been beefed up in the Maoist-hit districts of southern Odisha. With Red rebels striking the most in February and March, police are on high alert to avert any subversive activity.

Though there has been a decline in Maoist activities in Koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada districts in the past few months, police are leaving nothing to chance. "The situation is under control but we are not complacent. As has been the case, Maoists cause maximum damage to the state in these two months," said SP (Malkangiri) Akhileswar Singh.

The concern is genuine, as the Red rebels had killed a commandant and two deputy commandants of the BSF in a landmine explosion in Malkangiri district, in February last year. Laxmipur MLA Jhina Hikaka was kidnapped in Koraput district in March, 2012.

The previous year, Maoists had abducted the then Malkangiri collector R Vineel Krishna in February and attacked mines belonging to Nalco in Koraput district in April, in which 10 jawans of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were killed.

With the onset of summer, the ultras desert camps and head for home as soaring temperature makes life miserable in the forests. "It is also difficult to execute offensives during monsoon. After rains, they conduct training camps, prepares blue prints of major attacks and execute them between February and April," said a senior police officer engaged in anti-Maoist operations in Malkangiri district.

Police, however, are always on their toes with Maoists throwing challenges at the administration all through the year. "The warfare against Maoists has undergone tremendous changes in the recent years. Security has been tightened in areas with strong Maoist presence to prevent any untoward incident in the next three months," said SP (Koraput) Awinash Kumar.
