Police are Killing Native Americans at Higher Rate than Any Race, and Nobody is Talking About It
August 2, 2015

Americans are up in arms right now over the near epidemic number of deaths of African-American at the hands of police, and rightfully so. African-Americans make up only 13 percent of the population, yet they are the victims in 26 percent of all police shootings. That is nearly 3 times the rate of whites.

The outrage by the #Black Lives Matter movement is founded in statistical evidence which shows that the system inherently and with extreme bias disproportionately targets blacks.

That being said, there is one group who no one is talking about that is targeted more than everyone else. The racial group most likely to be killed by law enforcement is Native Americans. While Native Americans only make up 0.8 percent of the population, they make up 1.9 percent of all police killings.

According to a report by the Lakota People’s Law Project,

Despite gaining citizenship rights in 1924, Native Americans have yet to see the day that they enjoy benefits of a nation which boasts “liberty and justice for all.”

Unsettling reports of unfair treatment towards Native peoples by law enforcement are not isolated incidents—rather they are endemic of a deeply discriminatory justice system. Native American men are admitted to prison at four times the rate of white men and Native women at six-fold the rate of white women. Additionally, Native Americans are the racial group most likely to be killed by law enforcement.

Where is the outrage in the media for Native Americans?

It’s certainly not due to the lack of protests by the #NativeLivesMatter movement, as there are many of those. In fact, several of the Native American activists within the movement have been killed by police, causing even more outrage in the community.

Earlier this month, Native American activist, Rexdale W. Henry, 53, was arrested for failure to pay a traffic fine. Five days later, on July 14, Henry would be found dead in a Neshoba County, Mississippi jail cell.

Just days before Henry’s tragic death, another Native American woman was found dead in a jail cell. She was arrested for an alleged bond violation over a traffic charge. Sarah Lee Circle Bear was heard by her cellmates screaming for help prior to being found unresponsive in her cell.

On July 12, Paul Castaway, a Native American who suffered from schizophrenia, was gunned down by police. According to witnesses, he was holding a knife to his own throat during an episode when police shot and killed him.

Last December, 30-year-old Allen Locke was shot and killed by police, just one day after attending a protest against police brutality. Locke is a Native-American man who attended a #NativeLivesMatter rally that was being held locally.

Native American children are also victims of the state as a recent report from TruthOut pointed out earlier this month. According to the report, in South Dakota, Indigenous children make up 15 percent of the child population, but comprise more than half the children in foster care.

In order to profit off of the kidnapping of these children, South Dakota has claimed 100% of its foster children as ‘special needs’ for the past ten years in order to reel in extra money. The child “protective” system in South Dakota is incentivized by a $79,000 bonus per Native child.

The situation is nothing short of modern day human trafficking and murder, yet the media is silent. Why?

The answer to that question is not a simple one. However, one potential aspect of why the media and the government do not address the disproportionate targeting of natives by the state, is that it’s not divisive enough.

The Black Lives Matter movement has been used by the government and MSM to stoke a level of divide which hasn’t existed in this country since the days of Jim Crow. This divide is a necessary function of controlled media and it’s an essential part of the state’s existence.

#NativeLivesMatter doesn’t foster the same divide, therefore it’s not important to the establishment. However, it is important to those of us who care about the suffering and death of our fellow humans.

The good news is that through the power of social media, together we can shed light on these injustices. By sharing these stories and the work of the Lakota People’s Law Project, we can help to change this paradigm.

You do realize that the Indian are covered by their own BIA Police that hires Native Americans as a preference?
Noooo...!!! Why do you bother the man with details that put the issues into proper context ? Why are you so heartless ? You are such a mean...mean...person...!!!

Oh you beat me to it!
Probably a high percent of Native Americans were shot by Native American police on Native American Land.

It seems to me that there is a conspiracy to recruit low educated shit bag into police force and acquiesce the use of disproportional violence in USA.

Europe is white man land. You do not get to see European police responded in unprofessional ways that frequently and for a European police engaging in shooting spree is unimaginable.

The roots of problem is inequality. To maintain a unequal society, a higer degree of violence in law enforcement is needed.

Media in control of US bro

:(

Does that justify the killings?

And do you have any study as to at what hands most Native Americans end up being un-proportionately killed?

:(

No it does not justify the killings at all, in fact, the police brutality issue is real. Tho one thing we have to consider is the gun laws here in the United States, and in regards to low income groups, well, low income is usually correlated to higher instances of domestic violence and community violence as in the presence of gang activities.

This issue is definitely real , and should be tackled head on by the appropriate federal commissions as well as state level.

To be honest it is hard to tackle low income-related violence; because it is a cultural indoctrination and acculturation process, ergo, black on black crimes, lack of paternal activity in african american families; alcoholism in native american communities; obesity in native american communities, gang violence and gang culture in latin american communities.

This, definitely , isn't going to be solved any time soon. And it requires a structural reform to alleviate it; the problem is -- does government have the political capital to actually reform it? Or keep it as is ? I mean, voting blocks being an issue.

Sadly, that is.

All negative news as of late, did you notice?
I guess he got tired of having foreigners expresses outrage and sympathy for Tibet, North Korea, and Christians in China, so now he took it upon himself to express outrage and sympathy for supposedly 'oppressed' minorities in the US. The reality is that everyone sees the crocodile tears from him and does not take him seriously.

And he does not know how much money the tribes make from casinos on tribal lands.

To be honest, i feel the same way too. When last week the Chinese members were posting all negative news about Japan, i thought to myself, "wow". A las, its always interesting when we analyze state to state issues and how it transpires in the people to people level. I guess nerves will be touched, and i guess that's normal, i guess.

We just have to keep (or at least try to, lol) professional. Sometimes our passions and emotions get the best of us (i admit it happens to me more than once) , but we have to stay professional. Else we fall into the realm of ...troglodytes who have come and gone.

(and may they remain banned!)

Again, some dude (You know who) don't understand US law to extend trying to comment on US thread

Mainland US police (Organisation such as LAPD or NYPD) have NO jurisdiction on Reservation. Where Native or American Indian reside. Most tribe have their own land and own Police force, which surprise, surprise, consist of only Native American.

Even within that State, no one can arrest ANYONE in native Indian land. In fact, local police cannot even go into Native American Land unless accompanied by local sheriff and all arrest have to be done by local Sheriff.

It is literally impossible for local or federal LEA to enter a Reserve, let alone for local or federal LEA agent to shoot those in the reserve, indian or not.

And set aside this, not all shooting are unjust. Police shoot out (Reserve or local PD) happened all the time, if you don't want to get killed by the Po-Po, don't commit crime for Christ Sake and if you have to, don't shoot at the police and complied to what they say..

The Chinese members here believes that NGOs that focuses on Tibet, democracy, and other human rights issues in China are covert US government agencies. It is tough to maintain such a mental grip on that absurdity without occasionally losing conviction. Perhaps China should create her own covert NGOs and send agents into the black and Amerind communities to give Americans a taste of our own medicines.

Sadly, that is.

As I said again and again, Gun law is not the one to blame. In fact, almost every time after a mass shooting. The gun law actually go loosen a little.

Problem is, where the Governmental stance lies.

Gun law or not there re no effect on why crime are being committed in the first place. And the government (Especially the liberal) have its sight set on tighten up the Gun Law and they usually ignore the fact that you need to target the crime itself but not the weapon.

For those who does not understand US Federal Gun law, I have written a post sometime back explain

Understanding US Gun Law

It has always not because of Gun Law, as Gun law only control guns that purchase legally. And sad fact is, most people do not use a legal gun to commit crime, it would be in the same space as you drive your own car with your own plate to rob a bank.

Gun law is an easy fix of the gun problem in the US, that's why it was most talked about . Problem is, if you want mass shooting to extinct from American Society, the authority need to target social problem itself, such as medical assistance to mental illness or social injustice. Sure you can outright ban the firearms. But if those problem are not fixed, there will still be mass killing, but instead of gun, they may use knife, poison or arson.

...not all shooting are unjust.
The presumption here is that the US is a racist country to start, so if the victim is non-white, then regardless of cause and events, the shooting is automagically unjust.
