A retired Indian Army veteran, who served for 30 years, has been accused of being an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, NDTV reports.
The foreigners’ tribunal will hear the case filed by Assam police against Mohd Azmal Haque on Oct 13.
"I am very sad, I cried a lot. My soul is broken... After 30 years of service I have to face such insult," Haque told NDTV.
"If I were an illegal Bangladeshi, how could I serve the Indian army?"
Police verification is required to enlist in the army and Haque claims to have undergone it.
Illegal immigration from Bangladesh is a sensitive issue in Assam, where the BJP recently came to power with promises of sealing the border.
The security measures have also led to the harassment of Indian nationals, locals say.
Haque’s wife, Mumtaz Begum, had previously faced similar allegations.
"We produced all documents at the tribunal court that time. They declared her a proper Indian citizen," he said.
Social media criticised Assam police over the decision.
