New York, Dec 18 (bdnews24.com) The UN General Assembly has unanimously upheld the peace-centric development model of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina . Her proposal was accepted by the 67th UN General Assembly as its 29th item on its agenda on Monday.
The UN had accepted another proposal by the Bangladesh mission over autism just five days ago . Hasina's daughter Saima Wajed Putul was believed to be the moving force behind it.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina put forward the 'peace' model, inspired by her own life experience.
"During my half a century in politics, I have always been a crusader of peace. I believe that peace is achievable with the removal of injustice," she had said in 2008.
According to her these injustices include repression and absence of rule of law, inequality and economic disparity, deprivation and poverty, suppression of self determination, denial of secularism and multi-ethnicity, negligence of equal rights for women and the marginalised, as well as the lack of transparency and accountability of governments.
Later on Oct 23, a top level UN meeting at the 66th assembly unanimously accepted PM's proposal as a resolution. On Dec 22, the proposal was accepted under category of 'peoples empowerment and development'.
Bangladeshi Ambassador to UN's Bangladesh Mission A K A Momen said the resolution was historic as it included the name of Sheikh Hasina , which, he said, was highly unusual .
At a press conference he said the resolution was modeled on Hasina's philosophy .
A Dhaka hosted international conference on Aug 5 and 6 and Brazil hosted Rio+20 conference considered Sheikh Hasina's 'peace' model for global acceptance. According to Momen, the resolution was passed again.
The Ambassador said UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon would present the resolution in next year's 51st assembly of 'Commission for Social Development'.
The final dialogue over the Millenium Development Goal (MDG) would be held at the 69th UN general assembly in 2015. Relevant portions of 'people's empowerment and development' resolution will be considered for inclusion in the MDG..
A total of 30 countries including India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Algeria, Benin, Bhutan, Congo, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guyana, Honduras, Jordan, Madagascar, Maldives, Nepal, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia and Uganda helped in securing acceptance for the proposal, Momen said.
