ISLAMABAD - Apparently after conceding defeat before well-thought-out strategy of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for the election of Chairman Senate, PML-N in a last minute shrewd move by supporting the candidate of the opposition parties for this slot has once again isolated the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) politically.
Background discussions with some insiders of PTI indicate that Imran Khan had to face criticism within his own party after his premature announcement not to vote for any of the candidates of PPP and PML-N for the election of chairman Senate and deputy chairman Senate.
Some leaders in PTI feel that their party should keep its doors open for talks with both sides - the opposition and the treasury benches - to remain very much relevant in the Chairman Senate election instead of announcing to boycott the Senate elections. And thus becoming more significant in the future politics of the Upper House of the Parliament.
Political analysts believe that the situation for PTI is much similar to that emerged for it after the August 14 sit-in of the party in Islamabad. At that time, all the parliamentary parties in the Parliament had become united against the sit-ins of PTI and PAT while terming it an effort to derail the democracy. It was because of the pressure of the parliamentary parties that Vice Chairman PTI Shah Mahmood Qureshi had to go to the National Assembly to give his point of view on the protest launched by his party against alleged rigging in general elections irrespective of the fact that its MPs had tendered their resignations before NA Speaker.
So, the government in a last minute move has come out of the likely defeat from chairman Senate election.
However, Khan on Tuesday again endorsing the good credentials of chairman Senate candidate Mian Raza Rabbani said that his party would not vote for Rabbani.
If PTI remains stuck to its decision, the chances for Rabbani to become unanimous chairman Senate would be dim.
However, senior PPP lawmaker and spokesman to the former President Asif Ali Zardari explained that Rabbani would be unopposed chairman Senate if PTI and any of the other senators abstained from voting in the house. The Upper House of Parliament in March 2012 had unanimously elected Nayyer Hussain Bokhari after all the parliamentary parties of the house had supported him unconditionally.
Spokesman to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Umer Cheema, was contacted to have his version about the statements of Imran but he was not available.
PML-N’s ‘shrewd’ move isolates PTI again
