Bill Gates appreciated Pakistani government in protecting the lives and livelihood of the people.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has called Bill Gates and the President of Iran Dr. Hasan Rouhani to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and polio eradication.
While discussing the situation with Rouhani, the PM talked about the current coronavirus breakout and locust spread in the neighboring areas of Iran and Pakistan. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the President of Iran called PM Khan to greet him at the start of Ramazan.

On the other hand, the PM also spoke to Bill Gates to discuss the development in the situation regarding COVID-19 and the eradication of polio in Pakistan. The Prime Minister thanked the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for its support during this time of crisis.

Khan said that Pakistan is making full efforts to combat the virus outbreak through a coordinated and instant response. He added that Pakistan is facing a double challenge, of overcoming the pandemic and also keeping people from dying of hunger due to the lockdown.

The PM also said that the government has formulated a relief package of $8 billion to help people and businesses who have been worst affected by the virus. PM Khan also called for a ‘Global Initiative on Debt Relief’ for developing countries.

Bill Gates said the COVID-19 was a threat across the globe. He applauded the efforts of the Pakistani government in protecting the lives and livelihood of the people. The two also discussed polio eradication in Pakistan and the role of polio teams in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

Gates and the PM agreed that the routine immunization programs for children, especially the polio vaccine, could not be ignored. The two also discussed the need for a capacity increase of the National Institute of Health (NIH).
