ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday expressed determination to bring Balochistan our of its "sense of deprivation" that has been long felt by the its people by initiating a series of development projects to undo the neglect of decades in the province.

"Ensuring complete peace, security and socio-economic development for the people of Balochistan are the key priorities of my government," he said while chairing the second meeting of the National Development Council.

The Council's first meeting was held in August 2019 after its formation in June that year.

The prime minister said he was fully cognizant of the problems people in Balochistan face and expressed his commitment to turn the situation around by providing them relief and services in the best possible manner.

"Financial resources allocated for Balochistan in the past were never diverted towards the development of the province," he said.

The prime minister said such a state of affairs led to dismal development in the province and caused "a sense of deprivation"among its people.

The meeting reviewed in detail several projects related to the national development agenda.

These included the provision of means of communications in the remote areas of Balochistan, better facilities for irrigation, agriculture, energy, and setting up barter markets to attain optimal benefit from the Gwadar Port.

The premier said the development of Gwadar Port would be a game-changer, not only for the people Balochistan but also for the entire region.

"There must be a full focus on the development of infrastructure, provision of employment for the youth, and completion of road networks to gain benefit from the completion of the Gwadar Port and the CPEC," he said.

In this regard, the prime minister constituted a committee comprising Umar, Shaikh, and Chief Minister Kamal, that would submit a report to him on the priority areas for development — particularly in communications, agriculture, energy, and other important sectors.

The meeting also gave approval for the setting up of the Balochistan Mineral Exploration Company that would work for better utilisation of the mineral resources of Balochistan and boost exploration activities.

. . .
Bring all government services to the same level across the nation so that one feels one area, no matter how much economic activity is happening there or lack thereof, is worthy of more services (on a per capita basis) than any other.

From personal experience, in rural America, I and a few other students (all guys) were given a house by the hospital for the duration of our stay. We had a young man doing his surgical residency in oncology at that hospital. He had survived Brain cancer and was motivated to get back to school and start studying hard (he was in 8 or 9th grade at that time).

While he could not get treatment in his own state, His rural school and university had enough resources to get him to on the path to becoming the first oncology brain surgeon in his state.

Back to the topic, If we invest in our people equally, then we can make real progress on rooting out the corruption and other ills of our society.

P.S. I hope the government also starts a mass adult literacy program (and women’s centers so kids can be in daycare while the women get time to learn skills to earn a living) so that people can read and know their rights against the corrupt people that keep them down. Once people can read, they can learn new skills, and the government can build libraries so that people can teach themselves if resources are limited.

Lack of development because of the local Sadar culture purposely keeping the villagers under their bondage. It's a fragment of the Hindu culture..

They're assigned a very small part of the budget despite the land covering I believe 35%+ of Pakistan. Furthermore, there is very, very little development there by the State, and a lot of lawlessness. Lots of kidnappings occur there, and it's a somewhat deserted land just being used to extract resources. It is strategically and resourcefully important, its population is very less.

All leaders have said what Imran Khan has said but no progress occurs. It is difficult, Balochistan is a mountainous region, and the little population is extensively dispersed over this large piece of land.

I think the best solution would be a long term plan to start moving the rural people to urban centers and start making large planned urban centers or cities. Rural living is horrible there, due to dryness of the region, high temperatures, and lack of water and rain inland, as well as how rugged of a landscape it is. With the populations in urban centres, it would be much, much easier to allocate money for development of places with population without it going to waste or being inapplicable, and it would also be much easier to get rid of terrorists hiding in the rugged landscape by using an aggressive stand against them since there will be no spread population centres/villages/and all to worry about.
