KARACHI:

Prime Minister Imran Khan on late Friday hailed the reopening of Turkey's historic Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque after 86 years, following a Turkish court ruling.

"Felicitations to the Republic of Turkey, and H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on this historic day after the first prayers in 86 years were held at Hagia Sophia [Grand] Mosque," Khan said on Twitter.

Apart from the prime minister, several other Pakistani politicians and lawmakers, including the head of Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Sirajul Haq, and Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar also congratulated the Turkish government over the landmark move.

The first Friday prayers held in Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque on Friday marked the first acts of worship there in 86 years.

Thousands of people took part in the traditional Friday prayers both inside and outside the historic mosque in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest metropolis.

Before the Friday prayers, Erdogan recited from the Quran inside the reopened mosque, choosing from both the Surah Al-Fatihah and the Surah Al-Baqarah.

The iconic monument served as a church for 916 years until the conquest of Istanbul, and a mosque from 1453 to 1934 – nearly 500 years – and most recently as a museum for 86 years.

One of the most visited historic buildings in Turkey by domestic and international tourists, Hagia Sophia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, during its time as a museum.

On July 10, a Turkish court annulled a 1934 Cabinet decree that had turned Hagia Sophia into a museum, paving the way for its use again as a mosque after an 86-year hiatus.

In the new era for Hagia Sophia, Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate will oversee religious services at the mosque, while the Culture and Tourism Ministry will supervise restoration and conservation work.

The architectural treasure will also be open to both domestic and foreign tourists free of charge.

Hagia sophia was mosque from last 600 yrs , before that it was cathedral of orthodox cristians but not only religious site but centre of political hegemony and so many false beliefs were linked as supposedly constantine emperor was believed to return from heavens as a savior and so many like that so inorder to break resistance and all false beliefs sultan muhammad fateh turn it into mosque .
80 yrs before turned into museum by ataturk and now again turn into mosque by judicial verdict .

Almost 600 yrs before , with the fall of granada , thousands of mosques in spain were turned into churches and are still churches to this date .

You have twisted and misquoted the hadith .Dont spread false information .

Before fateh e Makkah , 100s of idols were in
and around kaba and for idol worshipers it was there main temple , now tell me if any hindu stand and claim that kaba was there Mandir 1500 yrs before and they have right on it . Would you say same what you have said now .

Welcome statement from the Prime Minister. With all due respect to my PM, he should learn from his good friend Mr Erdogan and follow up his words with prompt and decisive action. I am tired of living in a banana state where commies, ethnofascists, religion twisting nutjobs and the blood sucking elite run amuck.

When prime minister himself apploued the conversion of church to mosque... No wonder why whole of Pakistan has only around 20 temples... And no one knows when they will be destroyed

No one knows because no one care or has time in Pakistan to think or plan destruction of our temples and then do long term politics over it to grab power. Our minds do not work like that, neither this churn sell in Pakistan. We have more important issues to deal with.

Okey.... So where did rest of the temples go??? Vanished??? Just like Hindus???

I commend Erdogan's move to curtail Christian, Liberal and Secular terrorist ambitions and evil designs on our nations and their monuments.

Pakistan and Turkey must work together to liberate our lands and spread Islam.

Very proud of how far Turkey has come under the magnanimous leadership of Mr. Erdogan.

From the mess that hateful and evil Liberal/Secular traitors turned Turkey into:

Rivers strewn with garbage, lack of clean drinking water, refuse on the streets and insults of good religious Muslim sisters...

Does that remind anyone else of Pakistan?

Just like Turkey we've been infested with this liberal menace that opposed our nations birth in the 30s, opposed an Islamic constitution, worked alongside Hindu terrorists of the Pakistani National Congress who aided India in sowing seeds of discord between Pakistani's and Bengali's in 1970-1971.

No wonder Pakistan faces the problems it does now and the STUPID calls from the PPP and PML-N to impose nationwide lock downs is glaring proof of it. They've been brainwashing even good, decent Muslims into supporting their insane stupid vitriol and it needs to end.

We can not allow any more of their kind like Sheikh Abdullah who wanted to live as equals with Hindus and assisted in India's occupation of Kashmir and turning it into a large open air prison for our people.

I agree, he should have gone to pray in Hagia Sophia Mosque in fact a lot of Pakistan's top leadership should have gone.

I personally cannot wait to pray there.

@Yaseen1
"I think if ik was ruling turkey he would have converted it in to mandir"

Couldn't help but laugh at that one.

Very disappointed in this placating to a terrorist organization like Hinduism. It is unfortunate that the British left their slaves and tools who occupied our lands behind for us to deal with.

Unironically calling another religion a terrorist organization?

hadith of prophet Mohammed at end time Constantinople will exit Islam al mehdi will win it back

Islam existed Istanbul when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk took over Turkey.

Islam returned to Istanbul when Recep Tayyip Erdoğan took over Turkey.

Imran Khan will never be half the man Erdogan is, no matter how much he tries. He keeps exposing his hypocrisy and stupidity. He hails the re-dedication of Hagia Sophia as a mosque (rightly so), but simultaneously wants to construct an expensive and massive idol-worship temple in Islamabad of all places, that too from tax revenue. There are barely a few hundred Hindus in Islamabad, but Imran Khan's secular nature is clearly starting to spill out of the pious Muslim facade he attempted to create for himself to garner votes during the previous election. His "Medina Riasat" slogan rings hollow in light of his government's anti-Islam policies and acts.
