PM Imran Khan demands ban on Islamophobic content on Facebook

Sun, 25 Oct 2020, 11:06 PM

Prime Minister Imran Khan Sunday wrote to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook asking for Facebook to place a similar ban on Islamophobia and hate against Islam that has been put in place for the Holocaust.

The text of Prime Minister’s letter to Mr. Zuckerberg is given below:

Begin

“I am writing to draw your attention to the growing Islamophobia that is encouraging hate, extremism and violence across the world and especially through the use of social media platforms including Facebook. I appreciate your taking the step to rightly ban any posting that criticizes or questions the Holocaust, which was the culmination of the Nazi pogrom of the Jews in Germany and across Europe as Nazis spread across Europe.

However, today we are seeing a similar pogrom against Muslims in different parts of the world. Unfortunately, in some states, Muslims are being denied their citizenship rights and their democratic personal choices from dress to worship. In India, anti-Muslim laws and measures such as CAA and NRC as well as targeted killings of Muslims and blaming Muslims for Corona virus are reflective of the abominable phenomenon of Islamophobia. In France, Islam has been associated with terrorism and publication of blasphemous cartoons targeting Islam and our Holy Prophet (PBUH) has been allowed. This will lead to further polarization and marginalization of Muslims in France. How will the French distinguish between radical extremist Muslim citizens and the mainstream Muslim citizenry of Islam? We have seen how marginalization inevitably leads to extremism – something the world does not need.

Given the rampant abuse and vilification of Muslims on social media platforms, I would ask you to place a similar ban on Islamophobia and hate against Islam for Facebook that you have put in place for the Holocaust. The message of hate must be banned in total – one cannot send a message that while hate messages against some are unacceptable, these are acceptable against others. Nor should the world have to wait for a pogrom against Muslims, which is ongoing in countries like India and in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, to be completed before Islamophobia is banned. This in itself is reflective of prejudice and bias that will encourage further radicalization.”

Imran Khan is just trying to divert the focus from the real issue at hand.
He could have written this to Facebook a long ago but he decided to write it now so that he cannot be pointed out for inaction against the French audacious act.

.
The only alternative is to decouple, create your own marketplace, content and in desired language. Protect the privacy of the citizens, their kinship, identity and ideology. This is the way the world is heading, create your own niche. Internet is fast becoming set of giant bubbles, protect your own!

in-action? like not launching a nuke..yeah right..he has long being talking bout Islamophobia. Last year in UN speech he talked in length about it. This year too he talked and he condemned Charlie Hebdo publishing, all this long before current happenings. One doesn't takes actions in isolation. If by strong action you mean sending back of French amb to Pak, it can only be done once Muslim countries leadership at large takes a stand. Even while Erdogan condemned, Turkey didn't did it but France itself recalled after remarks.

Demand ? lol be ready for a giant Middle Finger Mr. PM ...
much better than using middle finger to type on keyboard :-)

Inaction is not doing anything. This is the exact apposite of inaction. This is not Pakistan's war alone against Islamophobia. He is doing his part. Infact doing everything in his power at all levels.
Where are all the other Muslim countries.

Facebook's monthly earning is greater than Pakistan's GDP. Why should Facebook give importance to Imran Khan?

Talking is not acting. What we did when American bombed our soldiers?
What are the diplomatic means to show your dissent? Have we used any?
Pakistan should have tried to call emergency OIC session.

Nice gesture by Imran Khan. But facebook won't respond.

.
If he really cares about Islamophobic content, he can ban Facebook in Pakistan.
If I can remember correctly Pakistan had banned YouTube few years back.

I think you are forgetting how he dealt with cartoons from Denmark. Did we break ties with them or threw their ambassador out? This is not some random cartoonist doing it, we are talking about the president of France. Breaking ties with France is your answer and throwing out their ambassador will achieve what exactly? Remember this is a war of narrative, doing exactly that will further damage your cause.
An incident took place in France. He rightly pointed out the injustice to Muslims and explained beautifully the sentiments of Muslims and their point of view.
You want to give a message to the world, it's done how he did it. You want to resort to abuses?

.
Pakistan should do what Iran did in 2006 and hold a Holocaust conference. This would be a proportionate response and expose the hypocrisy of the West in relation to free speech, especially if the Western leaders are forced to condemn it like they did with Iran.
