ISLAMABAD: The civil and military leadership of the country on Tuesday held detailed deliberations on the overall security situation with particular reference to the dialogue process with the Taliban.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif chaired the meeting on national security at the Prime Ministers House.
Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Adviser to the PM on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and DG ISI Lt Gen Muhammad Zaheerul Islam attended the meeting.
The top political and military leadership discussed the overall security situation in the country and the region as well as the upcoming visit of the prime minister to the United States.
They also discussed the issues of national security and relations with the US and Afghanistan. The dialogue process with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) also came under discussion.
The meeting was significant as the Taliban commander Hakimullah Mesud in a message had earlier said that the government should not set preconditions for the dialogue process and the Taliban would reciprocate to create a congenial atmosphere for talks.
The civil and military leadership welcomed the TTPs statement for not setting preconditions for talks and termed it a positive step towards the holding of talks.
However, the TTP was highly critical of drone attacks and they had demanded an immediate halt to the strikes if the government wanted to have a ceasefire with the Taliban.
The meeting expressed concern over giving a key role to India in the region by the United States as both the countries had agreed to monitor and block the funding of militant groups in Pakistan like the Jamaatul Dawaa and Haqqani network.
However, the military leadership gave a detailed briefing during the meeting and assured that the armed forces were always ready to defend the countrys territorial and ideological frontiers.
The prime ministers upcoming visit to the United States of America and PMs agenda in this regard also came up for discussion during the meeting.
It was decided in the meeting that the prime minister would demand from the American leadership an India-style civil nuclear agreement and a halt to drone attacks. The PM would, the meeting decided, discuss at length with US leadership Pakistans role in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US and Nato forces from the country, talks with the Taliban and other related issues.
The civil and military leadership expressed the resolve that an extended role for any country in the region would not be tolerated at any cost and Pakistan would defend its security and sovereignty at all costs and every sacrifice would be rendered in this regard.
According to sources, the meeting took stock of the growing relations between the US and India and the Indian efforts to assume the role of policeman in the region.
It was made clear in the meeting that Pakistan neither interferes in the affairs of any neighbouring country nor would it allow anyone to meddle in its affairs because Pakistan believed in settling all outstanding issues with neighbours through talks.
The meeting also took notice of the statements given by the US at the behest of the Indian leadership and it was decided that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would hold detailed talks on these issue as Pakistan could not ignore its interests in the region.
