PM back home a day early - Biman delays trip of 120 by 23 hours
A Biman flight with 120 passengers from the UK was delayed by 23 hours yesterday, as the airlines management had to reschedule its London-Sylhet flight due to the prime ministers return from Belarus one day early.
In addition, scheduled flights to Riyadh and Jeddah had also been delayed by 24 hours yesterday, said Biman sources.
Although no official explanation was given by the government as to why the PM cut the visit short, her Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad yesterday said the PM decided to come home, as all the scheduled programmes had finished early.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina flew to London on a scheduled flight of the national airlines on July 4.
According to the original plan, a Biman Boeing 777-300ER was supposed take the PM and her entourage to Minsk from London on Monday. It was not supposed to wait there. But, the foreign ministry officials informed Biman management that the PM had shortened her stay and would return just after 24 hours. This forced Biman to keep the plane at Minsk disrupting its flight schedule.
A source in Biman said, The management of Biman Bangladesh Airlines had recommended chartering the aircraft that took the PM to Belarus, as it would cost more to send another aircraft to Belarus within 24 hours.
The PMs protocol section would bear the expense for her return. The amount of money spent for this purpose could not be known immediately.
The sources also said on her flight to London, regular passengers had flown with the premier but no cargo was allowed due to safety concerns. However, when the PM avails flights of foreign airlines they are allowed to carry cargo, the sources added.
Meanwhile, on arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Hasina expressed displeasure over the in-flight service. She asked Civil Aviation Minister Faruk Khan, who was at the airport to receive her, why there was no variation in the in-flight duty-free items sold, claimed sources. They said the PM told the minister that the passengers would not buy those items.
