The Noble Sanctuary, or Temple Mount, is a spiritual microcosm of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, writes Diab [Reuters]

@diabolicalidea

The growing familiarity of clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian protesters inside Al-Aqsa Mosque this week has not weakened the effect of the conflict on my Palestinian neighbours and friends in Jerusalem.

The picturesque, stone-lined alleyways of an already tense Old City are seething with anger and frustration, punctuated by Israeli surveillance helicopters that hang in the air. Even unreligious Palestinians who have never stepped foot inside churches or mosques are furious. They partly envisage their wider demise encapsulated by the struggle over the Noble Sanctuary, as they call it, or the Temple Mount, as it is known to Jews.

The symbolism of the confrontation around the holy site quickly triggered an international response. The three days of clashes provoked a stern warning from neighbouring Jordan, with which Israel has a peace accord. "Any more provocations in Jerusalem will affect the relationship between Jordan and Israel,"warned Jordan's King Abdullah II. "Jordan will have no choice but to take action, unfortunately."

Who provoked the clashes at Al-Aqsa?

"We call on the international community, including Arab countries and Muslim states, to intervene immediately before Israel succeeds in launching a global holy war," said Hanan Ashrawi, the veteran Palestinian politician, activist, and academic.

This largely secular conflict is far from being a "holy war", as I have argued before. But if Israel continues on a unilateral path on this issue, a religiously tinged, open conflict could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The European Union and the United States also expressed their concerns about the escalating situation. "It is crucial that all parties demonstrate calm and restraint and full respect for the status quo of the holy sites," said European Commission spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic. The "status quo" in question is one that has governed the Noble Sanctuary/Temple Mount since Israel conquered Jerusalem in 1967, whereby the Islamic Waqf and Jordan have been managing the site and controlling access, with limited non-Muslim visits permitted, but worship banned.

Status quo

But it is concern over reports of the Israeli right's intentions to tear up this status quo that has fuelled the latest round of clashes, just as they did in 2014. Back then, Jordanrecalled its ambassador to Israel and threatened to review the peace treaty between the two countries, following a Knesset debate that was sponsored by the far-right parliamentarian Moshe Feiglin, on whether or not Israel should seize sovereignty of the holy site and allow Jewish worship there.

This jewel in the crown of Jerusalem's Old City, with its gold-plated Dome of the Rock dominating the skyline, contains many of the elements which perpetuate the conflict.

Although relatively few Israelis actually visit the Temple Mount and have traditionally been content with the status quo, Zionists and Jewish extremists in recent years have managed to frame the issue as one of religious freedom. Even the lunatic fringe - such as Yehuda Glick, who, along with his followers, fantasises about constructing the Third Temple - is pursuing the path of civil liberties.

"We're here to protest against the apartheid on the Temple Mount," Glick said at a demonstration last Ramadan.

But what the religious freedom argument overlooks is that this issue is about far more than the right to worship, particularly in a situation where Israel regularly restricts Palestinian entry to Al-Aqsa. You could also say that the Noble Sanctuary/Temple Mount is simply a spiritual microcosm of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at large.

This jewel in the crown of Jerusalem's Old City, with its gold-plated Dome of the Rock dominating the skyline, contains many of the elements that perpetuate the conflict and are writ spiritual: The site is symptomatic of control of, and sovereignty over, the land, asymmetrical power, national identity, movement restrictions, draconian laws; the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians, not to mention the status of Jerusalem.

Shared peace

Personally, I am in favour of Jews one day worshipping on their religion's most sacred, hallowed ground. My view, though controversial, is not unprecedented. Following the surrender of Jerusalem to the Muslim armies, Omar Ibn al-Khattab, the second caliph, allowed Jews, who had been expelled by the Byzantines, back into Jerusalem. Omar ordered the cleaning of the Temple Mount, which had been used as a rubbish tip by the Byzantines, and, according to some historians, permitted Jews to worship there. The practise would continue for a century, into the Umayyad era.

One Jewish convert to Islam, Rabbi Ka'ab al-Ahbar, even located the foundation stone for the Muslim conquerors. It is also possible that Omar allowed the Jews to construct a synagogue on the mount and appointed a Jew as the first governor of Jerusalem, according to the 7th-century Armenian historian, Sebeos.

In the enlightened 21st century, it should be possible for Muslims and Jews to share this holy site and rediscover their many long centuries of a largely peaceful coexistence. One day, Jews and Muslims might both enjoy the Noble Sanctuary's tranquil esplanade, which takes up about one-sixth of the Old City's surface area and is where families picnic and children play football. For that to happen, we require a resolution to the conflict. Without peace, it is impossible to think that that Palestinians and Israelis will ever find the goodwill and trust to compromise over this holiest of locations.

Agreed, the people in the region need to change in their nature. They don't want to be important or have a meaning to the world. Instead they all take pride in nationalism in the wrong ways. The best example is Egypt, the state system has never changed, since the people are content with a leader that emphasizes a boogeyman(MB in this case) and rallies his people around 'security threat'. His sponsored media thrives off hatred and fearmongering because without a sense of insecurity he won't survive any longer. Hence Egyptian army will make up stories about killing 70 militants a day, 400+ per week. Some months several thousand militants, basically ever since Sisi took power, he killed more militants than there are residents present in the Sinai. He brought nothing in terms of education reform, or economic reform, or social justice reform. Throw social justice out the window, he is brutal dictator. Economy wise, all I've seen are attempts to increase low paying labor jobs involved in construction. Education wise, just go look at literacy rate in Egypt. Now, I cut them slack since they have too high of population. But overall, the Egyptian people are content with that. This is not entirely their fault as the major objective of dictators in the region is to get the people to seek only calm and be content with it. There is no need for democracy, education reform or else all hell will break loose and we will execute you and your family extra-judicially. And the people have become adept to this, which is the reason the region is going backwards. Every government essentially serves foreign clientele, Sisi government promises Israel cooperation and promises US/Gulf crackdown on opponents in Egypt hence gets the support that will suit his fanbase and most importantly upper brass which will have heavy pockets from 'added benefits'. While the population continues to live subpar life.

This is case with Assad as well, he presents himself as alternative to regional insurgency and lately this has become appealing to local nations and the ones far away. Iranians that are high on nationalist pride blindly support his regime as well. Which is sad since Iranians appear to be productive, innovative and explorative peoples. But this is what happens when you have small sense of power, you feel comfortable to make immoral stances. Israel, doesn't need to take such actions inside the mosque, but it has the power to be an asshole and there is no natural system holding anyone accountable. I am opposed to Assad as you know and believe Iran should let him go but at same time I don't want chaos in Lebanon or anywhere else. I don't think armed groups in Syria are ready to take on bigger roles in the region. And I also fear the results, since if Syrian Sunni rebels win, they will become to Sunni's what Hezbollah is to Shia's. Hence there is increased risk of Sunni-Shia clash to replace it with Sunni alternative which will be more appealing in post-Assad Syria.

We are in a complicated case, but one thing we all agree on is local populations have odd priorities and low standards or simply powerless to make change. And everytime one of us encourage oppression or authoratianism it lengthens the period we see going on currently.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Dozens of Palestinians were injured on Friday as Israeli forces suppressed protests across the West Bank in support of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound amid ongoing entry restrictions.

An Israeli armyspokespersondid not immediately respond for comment on the number of injuries, but said clashes in the West Bank were ongoing.

Israeli forces on Friday afternoon shot and injured a Palestinian with live bullets in clashes in Silwad village, northeast of Ramallah, local sources said.

Israeli forces raided the village and the house of Muammar Ayyad and assaulted his family members, anumber of whom were taken to Ramallah hospital to treat their bruises and fractures.

Army: Rocket fired from Gaza lands in southern Israel

BETHLEHEM (Maan) -- A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in the southern Israeli city of Sderot on Friday, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an.

The spokesperson said the rocket landed adjacent to an empty bus, causing moderate damage to the vehicle.

No injuries were reported in the attack.

No group has taken responsibility for the rocket fire, but the Israeli government holds Hamas, as the elected ruling party, responsible for any activity within the enclave.

Earlier today, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinians who had approached near the border fence north of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces fired two rockets at an al-Qassam Brigades military site known as Falasteen, causing damages, however no injuries were reported.

Israeli forces said the attack was in response to alleged sniper fire from the Gaza Strip, which hit a house in the Netiv Hatsra neighborhood, adjacent to the besieged territory, also causing no injuries.

I have a gun in my house, I'm not looking for confrontation. I can store what I want in my property, if hostile people are approaching my property with hostile intentions(provocation or murder) I will point the gun at their heads meters before they approach. Once again you demonstrate your lack of logic.

Israeli police clash with Palestinians in Jerusalem - Al Jazeera English

Four Israeli police officers have been wounded in clashes with Palestinian protesters in occupied East Jerusalem.

Friday's clashes followed days of unrest at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound where Muslim men under the age of 40 have been banned from attending prayers.

Israeli police said that Palestinians attacked them with firebombs when they were trying to re-open a road that the protesters were blocking.

The new wave of violence started on September 13 when Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to arrest what they called Palestinian "stone throwers".

The moved sparked clashes, which have been continuing since.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat told the Jerusalem Post on Friday that the Palestinians "will pay a dear price" for their actions.

"The message I have to those causing the disorder is that they are endangering their own lives," he said.

Hamas is showing significant restraint in light of the latest events.. Or maybe they have no more capabilities to really fight a war anymore. In any case, it's probably for the best.

They are showing restraint not just with security issues(aerial bombardment, shootings, special force teams invading during night) and not related to military preparedness. Israel is now dealing with an unstable West Bank, the center is shifting to the West Bank. The settlements and provocations are not being tolerated. Concrete steps need to be taken for calm to prevail otherwise there is no hope for governance in the territories. Abbas will make a speech at UN either dismantling Oslo accords agreement or dismantling PA according to some reports. Even if he doesn't, he is reaching the peak of his career.
