This must be from the recent exercises.
edit: Is it just the lighting or have some ships been painted a more darker grey? (like 171, which used to be quite white). Are they simulating an attacking force vs a defending force?

These are photos of the recent South China Sea live firing exercise by ships of North, East and South Sea fleets.
It is the biggest live firing exercise by PLAAN, and the first joint exercise by all three fleets, as I can recalled. I think a total of 77 SSM and SAM missiles were fired. (I can't find the article on the exact number at this minute).
Also, this exercise was possibly a respond to the US-South Koreas joint exercise.
