PUNE: The Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) sister laboratory Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, has won the ‘DRDO Award for Performance Excellence 2012’ for ‘outstanding contribution’ in design, development, production and successful induction of the Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher System (MBRL) in the Indian Army.
“Anil M Datar, Outstanding Scientist and Director, ARDE, and his team were awarded the DRDO Award for Performance Excellence for the year 2012 for their outstanding contribution in design, development, production and successful induction of all weather, indirect fire Pinaka MBRL into Indian Army,” an official release issued by the Defence PRO stated.
The Pinaka MBRLS is the first indigenous rocket system successfully designed, developed and produced by the ARDE with the help of private industries. The rocket system has been tested rigorously by the Army and cleared for induction. The rockets are presently under mass manufacture at Ordnance Factory, Itarasi (MP).
The system has a maximum range of 39-40 km and can fire a salvo of 12 high explosive rockets in 44 seconds, neutralising a target area of 3.9 square km.
Pinaka saw service during the Kargil War, where it was successful in neutralising enemy positions on mountain tops. It has since been inducted into the Indian Army in large numbers.
The DRDO Award was also given to former Pune-based Indian Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Air Marshal (Retd) BN Gokhale. He was given the ‘Award for Excellence for Self Reliance’ for his ‘outstanding contribution in the field of Strategic Security Systems and Low Intensity Conflicts.’
The DRDO Awards are presented annually for outstanding contributions made towards furthering DRDO’s efforts in self-reliance.
