Pinaka II trial successful: DRDO

Wow! I didn't know that the warheads are thermobaric, more powerful than FAE (Fuel Air Explosive which requires more oxygen to ignite). This is deadly as it first sucks out the oxygen in the area and then ignites it producing a massive blast of colossal proportions. Sucking out the atmospheric oxygen is so intense that it collapses the lungs of any personnel within the danger zone. A horrible death follows! So its a double whammy to enemy troops!

This is the ideal "infantry-killer" weapon. It works very well against massed infantry. FAE is no less horrendous; I've seen a test of that. Its now one of the choice of warheads for Prithvi, apart from being aircraft launched.

I had met the late Dr Abdul Kalam about 10 years ago and he did mention then that the Prithvis will be equipped with FAE warheads. They have probably graduated to the more deadly thermobaric warheads now as a standard warhead of choice!

And that's bad news for the enemy! Real bad! There will be no place to run, no place to hide!

Sir, Pinaka range of ops being -10 to 55 degree celsius. Technically, the lower end of spectrum is defined for adverse weather capability so that the system can be called all weather capable. Since the temperatures were low, i am implying that Pinaka is demonstrating in user trials in such conditions which are towards the lower spectrum of that limit.

Obviously its not Leh Ladakh or more colder places where we could do tests but in general getting lower spectrum of temperature for testing out a rocket systems temperature tolerance is not readily done.

I am not comparing it with low temperature led challenges for rotory wings or fixed wing type in high altitude. Its correct that when we say cold tests we imply normally a aircraft or helicopter test in cold night soaked conditions in high altitude in general. Here i am implying more from systems tolerance level perspective.

Thanks for clarification. Your post which was quoted was open ended hence asked what are you trying to drive at.

'Pinaka' fails in mission parameters
After nearly 20 years into development, indigenously developed Pinaka rocket system failed to meet mission parameters during a trial from Chandipur base on Wednesday, putting the reliability on the weaponry system at a stake.

Sources said two rounds of an advanced version of Pinaka rocket were test-fired from a multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) positioned in the testing range of Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) between 11 am and 12 noon.

Both the rockets failed to provide the desired result as expected by the mission team. “The experimental trials were carried out by the DRDO. The rockets could not cover the designed distance and some of their sub-systems too did not function properly. Further analysis was on,” the sources said.

Wednesday’s tests were conducted by personnel of Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) at the PXE firing point-2. Pinaka rocket system, which has already undergone several tough tests since 1995 and inducted in the armed forces, has been drawing criticism for over a decade for its poor show during the Kargil war.

The tests were, however, conducted nearly two weeks after similar trials of the Pinaka Mark-II Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher System from Chandhan area in Pokhran field firing ranges of Rajasthan, which were stated as ‘successful’ by the DRDO. The trials were conducted by the DRDO and Indian Army.

Contacted, a DRDO official neither confirmed the ‘failure’ nor did he deny it. He, however, said data on the trials could not be collected due to bad weather. “The trials were conducted for a longer range than its previous trails. The inclement weather came as a hindrance for retrieving data,” he said.

Describing the tests as routine, he said earlier this year, 10 rounds of Pinaka rockets were tested from the same base on January 30 and 31, and February 28. “The developmental trials of the advanced system will continue and the rocket is expected to be pressed into service very soon,” he added.

While the older version of the rocket system has a strike range of 40 km, its advanced version can strike a target beyond 55 km and is capable of acting as a force-multiplier. It has been developed to supplement artillery guns. The system can be operated in four modes __ autonomous, stand-alone mode, remote and manual.

Did you even bother to check out the fukin' date of this report? It's as old as the hills - Published: 08th August 2013 12:49 PM. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then and the Pinaka has been perfected.

Its interesting, Pinaka now has same range that of nasr, but with a higher accuracy.
You have done a cardinal sin, by talking about Nasr.... You will be made to pay by ur blood.... Be ready for that.

.
main point which all of are missing is that with 60km of range it can cover most of the pakistani punjab cities from with in our border which is a great deterrence cause these will be mass produced and can be used in strategical strikes

Fuel air explosives are, in fact, one kind of thermobaric weapons. FAEs contain only fuel and explosive, and no oxidizing agents. Hence they suck the air in the vicinity.

.
What was this? Both are different categories of weapons for different use. And a missile will have greater accuracy than a MLRS. We have short range missile in terms of Prahar.

OTOH, if I recall correctly, there is some talk of boosted rockets for Mk 2 which achieve range of 80+ kms. I may be wrong, but there was plan to upgrade range too.
There is designing going on at DRDO will be called MK III but it will be completely new design from current version. Having range of 120 Km, Also work is going on to make them guided rockets This will be very big achievement as its costing is damn low to fire in thousands at enemy.

.
The Indian army currently operates 62 Smerch MLRS Systems which comes with a maximum range of 90 km. India had brought Smerch MLRS Systems from Russia in 2006 and since then has been asking Russia to provide TOT for Smerch System to increase Indian armies offensive weaponry capabilities, but it has been repeatedly turned down.

Pune based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) of DRDO which developed Pinaka MK-1 and MK-2 will now shift focus on the development of new long-range MLRS which will surpass the performance of imported Smerch MLRS Systems.

According to ARDE new Rocket System, unlike Pinaka MK-1 and MK-2 will not have Commonality with older systems and entirely will be a new design which will feature new launcher systems and rockets too will be longer and heavier and will be equipped with more firepower which will allow them to hit targets in range of 110-120 Km.

The Indian army currently is happy with DRDO developed Pinaka-I systems and plans to order more to replace older Russian-made BM-21 Launchers and also is looking forward on Pinaka-2 systems which will start user trails soon. Government after blunt Russian refusal has ruled out the import of more Smerch MLRS Systems from Russia without TOT signaling an end to dependence on Russia for future Rocket systems.

Congrats DRDO!

Two points:

1. Refrain from underlined language ..... it is a troll bait ... while the other poster is trolling you are fanning it.

2. He will ask ... which coffee and you will go down this road again ... learn to ignore. Let them face the 'failed' Pinaka when the salvos of the fire units will come in on them in a density which will even kill a cockroach ... why bother ... contribute to the thread please .. ignore ....for most ignorance is a bliss ... for some ignorance can be a bliss ...

Before signing off ... just one thing : never argue with a fool, (s)he brings you down to his/her level and beats you with experience (and you have read something similar by Sun Tzu minus the fool)...

Sorry for the unsolicited advice!

Analysis: How thermobaric bombs work

_1854371_thermo_bomb3_inf300.gif

The term "thermobaric" is derived from the effects of temperature (the Greek word "therme" means "heat") and pressure (the Greek word "baros" means "pressure") on the target. Thermobarics first disperse a flammable mist of underoxidised fuel which ignites to create a gigantic explosion of immense destructiveness. The explosion of the SMAW-NE is effective in three main ways. Firstly, it is accompanied by a massive fireball which incinerates all in its path. Secondly, it creates a massive pressure wave capable of rupturing the internal organs of all those nearby and so powerful that it can reduce load-bearing walls to rubble and bring down buildings. Finally, the explosion also sucks all the oxygen out of the air, asphyxiating anyone in the immediate vicinity . Basically, if you’re in the building when it hits, it’ll kill you.

Thermobaric devices are tailor-made for some situations, and there’s a much bigger BLU-118/B Thermobaric Weapon in use, which is very good against Hard and/or Deeply Buried Targets (HDBTs), and no place on Earth has more military targets tunneled in rock than Afghanistan. See these excellent diagrams showing the inventiveness of the Afghani trogolodites from the New York Times and the Washington Post.

The airblast propagation of the BLU-118/B makes it ideal for detonation within such a tunnel system and that’s what it is being used for

The thermobaric weapon integrates, demonstrates and delivers an improved weapon system for the functional defeat of tunnel targets. Functional defeat refers to eliminating a facility's capability to perform its intended function, even though the structure itself may remain largely intact. It relies on denial, disruption, degradation, or destruction of one or more of the critical elements in the tunnel necessary to perform its mission (personnel, equipment, or environmental support). The demonstration will be completed this year.

  1. The initial anaerobic detonation reaction, microseconds in duration, is primarily a redox reaction of molecular species. The initial detonation reaction defines the system's high pressure performance characteristics: armor penetrating ability.
  2. The post detonation anaerobic combustion reaction, hundreds of microseconds in duration, is primarily a combustion of fuel particles too large for combustion in the initial detonation wave. The post detonation anaerobic reaction define the system's intermediate pressure performance characteristics: Wall/Bunker Breaching Capability.
  3. The post detonation aerobic combustion reaction, milliseconds in duration, is the combustion of fuel rich species as the shock wave mixes with surrounding air. The post detonation aerobic reaction characteristics define the system's personnel / material defeat capability: Impulse and Thermal Delivery. Aerobic combustion requires mixing with sufficient air to combust excess fuels. The shock wave pressures are less than 10 atmospheres. The majority of aerobic combustion energy is available as heat. Some low pressure shock wave enhancement can also be expected for personnel defeat. Personnel / material defeat with minimum collateral structure damage requires maximum aerobic enhancement and the highest energy practical fuel additives: Boron, Aluminum, Silicon, Titanium, Magnesium, Zirconium, Carbon, or Hydrocarbons.
Thermobaric materials can provide significantly higher total energy output than conventional high explosives. The majority of the additional energy is available as low pressure impulse and heat.
