Pictures of Chinese people - 56 ethnic groups

Hezhen people 赫哲族

Hezhen people or Nanai people 赫哲族, numbered about 5,500, are an official recognized ethnic group of China. Hezhen are Tungusic people of the far east living along Helongjiang 黑龙江, Songhuajiang 松花江 and Ussuri 乌苏里江 rivers on the Middle Amur Basin. The ancestors of the Hezhen were the Jurchens of northernmost Manchuria. There are about 12,000 Hezhen, who are named Goldi, living across the border in Russian Far East.

The Hezhen belongs to the Manchu-Tungusic branch of the Altai languages. In China they use Chinese characters and Cyrillic scripts in Russia. The Hezhen are mainly Shamanist, with a great reverence for the bear (Doonta) and the tiger (Amba). They also worship the spirits of the sun, the moon, the mountains, the water and the trees. According to their beliefs, the land was once flat until great serpents gouged out the river valleys. They consider that all the things of the universe possess their own spirit and that these spirits wander independently throughout the world.

Hezhen are traditional fishermen and their clothing was made out of fish skins, hence, the name "Fish-skin Tartar" 鱼皮鞑子. This name has also been applied, more generically, to other aboriginal groups of he lower Songhua Valley and lower Amur basins. During the Manchukuo period, the Hezhen were practically wiped out in China by the Japanese and in 1949 they were numbered about 300.

Yimakan storytelling consists of many independent episodes depicting tribal alliances and battles, including the defeat of monsters and invaders by Hezhen heroes. Yimakan performers improvise stories without instrumental accompaniment, alternating between singing and speaking, and make use of different melodies to represent different characters and plots. Yimakan plays a key role in preserving the Hezhen mother tongue, religion, beliefs, folklore and customs.

It is also one of the three culture heritages the Government of China granted to the Hezhen people

The Hezhen people were referred to "Fishskin Tartar" 鱼皮鞑子 by the Europeans in the past because they wore clothes and accessories made from fish skin. Incidentally, in modern time, the skill of making clothes from fish skins earn them comfortable living styles and the art itself is listed as a "culture heritage" by the Government

Although there are still some Hezhen remain in the fishing business, however, you don't see much mom and pop operations anymore. Most Hezhen go into different fields like farming, industries, art & education and other technical areas.
