The high-security cordon thrown around the Parliament Street area during Friday's Congress protest might have hassled common people but it was no deterrent for pickpockets. Three Congress members who attended the protest have lost their mobile phones and filed police complaints. Police suspect involvement of an organised gang that might have entered the area along with the protesters.
In the first complaint filed around 11.30am on Friday, Prashant Upadhyay from Bharatpur said during the march, he felt someone tugging at his kurta. "Before I could look back, the cellphone kept in a pocket was gone." The double-SIM phone has since been switched off, he said.
Kuldeep Indora, an MLA from Jaipur, realised his mobile phone had gone missing only after returning to his house in Saket and registered a complaint at the local police station.
Parminder Singh, an MLA from Punjab, said the thieves might have joined them during the march and had lifted his iPhone 6S+ from his pocket. A large crowd had gathered at the Parliament street police station after Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh and former defence minister A K Antony were detained during the protest.
Many protesters claimed despite a security cover, a large number of outsiders had entered the area around Rail Bhavan. Separate cases under IPC section 379 (theft) have been registered.
