Tens of thousands have been evacuated succesfully and sent home safely so far. Let it not be missed, that a HUGE potential tragedy has been averted, or rather abated. If it was not for the sterling work done round the clock by the army, IAF, paramilitaries, NDRF and other agencies, the death toll and economic devastation would have been orders of magnitude higher. Evacuating 50,000+ people from such terrain and weather to safety in such a short time in such a resource constrained country like India is no smal feat. It is also very encouraging to see the whole country stand together as one in these difficult times - not much political bickering or divisive statements. Religious groups have all set shelters and food distribution sites for every needy. All the civilian and military agencies are doing their best in one massive, concerted effort. Such unity in the face of adversity truly gives tremendous hope for the future.

"We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity. "

It seems that a good bit of the concentrated clusters of people have been evacuated. But there are small groups of people who either moved up into the mountain heights and or who moved on the roads that were heavily damaged that have to be located and extracted.

Air Force's massive C-130J makes maiden landing at Dharasu, evacuates 113 people

As rescue and relief operations continue on a war footing in Uttarakhand, the Indian Air Force (IAF) today pressed into service the C-130J, a massive transport aircraft, which brought back to safety 113 people who were rescued in Uttarakhand. Those rescued include 17 foreign nationals, who arrived at the Hindon Air Force base near Ghaziabad, a suburb of Delhi.

Famously known as the "Super" Hercules, the C130-J landed at Dharasu - an advanced landing ground near Uttarkashi - for the first time, which has a landing strip that is only 4,500 feet long. The pilots also had to contend with inclement weather.

The aircraft also replenished fuel supplies, critical choppers that are already in service to help rescue thousands stranded across the state.

The Air Force has committed three C130-Js to its "Operation Rahat" in Uttarakhand - the ongoing rescue and relief work in the rain-ravaged state is the biggest ever undertaken by the armed forces.

While the second C130-J has flown to Dharasu with more fuel, the third will transport medical supplies.

The Army and Air Force have deployed over 40 helicopters for rescue efforts, but a shortage of fuel has been a point of major concern. The C130-J is bound to augment those operations.
