Unidentified people picked up renowned photographer and activist Shahidul Alam from his residence at Dhanmondi in Dhaka Sunday at about 10:30pm, alleged his colleagues and family members.
Founder of Drik and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, the award-winning photographer was picked up a day after he was assaulted while capturing photos of the ongoing students’ protests and his camera was vandalized in Dhanmondi area.
‘A group of people in plainclothes by black cars came to his building on road no 32 of Dhanmondi, broke its CCTV cameras, disconnected intercom connection of the building, kept the guards confined and entered into Shahidul’s apartment on the third floor and took him away between 10:30pm and 10:35pm,’ Saydia Gulrukh, one of the directors of Drik told New Age.
She said that Shahidul had been crying when the people had been taking him away.
‘We want him alive, unharmed,’ she said.
Dhanmondi police station duty officer sub-inspector Mahidul Islam at 11:15pm said that they received the information and sent police force to the spot.
‘Besides, we have sent wireless messages to the police stations in Dhaka in this connection,’ he said.
