The VBTP-MR (Portuguese" Viatura Blindada Transporte de Pessoal - Armored Personnel Carrier Vehicle - Medium Wheeled Type") dubbed Guarani is a family of 19,6 tones 6x6 armored, amphibious vehicles, developed jointly by Iveco and the Brazilian Army (DCT - Department of Science and Technology) following the contract signed in 2009.
The Brazilian Army has signed with Italian Company Iveco Defence Vehicles a contract worth about €2.5 billion for supplying armored personnel carriers of the VBTP-MR model. The vehicles will replace the old Urutu armored vehicle in service with the Brazilian armed forces. The contract covers the delivery of 2,044 vehicles and logistical support for a period of 20 years.
The Guarani was developed by IVECO based on the Superav wheeled armored personnel carrier. The APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) version of the Guarani can carry a crew of up to 11 military personnel including driver and commander. The hull of the vehicle provides protection against firing of small arms fire, artillery shell splinters, mine, and IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) explosion blast.
The Guarani can be fitted with manned and unmanned turrets which can be armed with machine guns and automatic cannon up to 30mm.
The VBTP is powered by an Iveco Cursor 9 turbocharged diesel engine developing 383 hp. The vehicle can reach a maximum road speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.
