Philippines orders US navy to pay US $1.5 Million
Philippines authorities have ordered the US navy to pay more than US $1 million in compensation for the damage done to a world heritage-listed coral reef by an American warship.
An assessment by the Philippines authorities estimates 2,400 metres of the Tubbataha Reef was damaged when the US minesweeper.
The Philippines has issued a damages claim to the US for US $1.5 million.
The authority managing the reef, the Tubbataha Management Office, has described the fine as a "slap on the wrist" compared to the US $45 million spent on salvage operations.
The US has also stood down the commanding officer and three crew from the ship which was removed from the reef in pieces to avoid further damage.
