PESHAWAR: At least 20 persons have been killed and 90 others injured in a high intensity explosion in Koocha Risaldar located behind Qisa Khawani Bazar in Peshawar on Friday.

Police sources confirmed the above casualties which resulted after a powerful blast in a narrow and congested ally where a market is situated.

The injured including women and children are being shifted to different hospitals of the city including Lady Reading Hospital where emergency has been declared.

Power went off in the area after the explosion, plunging the area into darkness.

Ambulances and rescue teams headed towards the blast site – a congested area which has been cordoned off by the police.

Windowpanes of the nearby buildings were shattered by the blast which also damaged many shops and vehicles. The blast also triggered fire which is being extinguished by the fire fighters.

IG NWFP, Malik Naveed Khan talking to Geo News said about 20 to 25 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast which was planted in a vehicle.

He said the explosion has left a crater on the ground which indicates the blast was not a suicide attack.

Troubling.

We really need to put in some extra effort into protecting Peshawaris.

May God rest the departed in peace. Perhaps all the people talking about sponsoring terror in Pakistan would be at ease now but this vicious cycle is likely to consume many more before the sense prevails. Hope that happens quickly..... by the way, i heard a news attributed to NWFP government blaming "foreign hand".

i believe all the efforts of the govt should be diverted to the progress of balauchistan and NWFP. this is the only way we can route out terrorism...or maybe..

Ina lillahi wa inna ilaihi raje'oon.

May Allah rest the victims in peace and heaven.

There are some obvious distinctions that differs the said incident from routine suicide blasts in Pakistan;

1. There is no military or governmental location nearby or within the affected area.

2. Most of the victims are women and children.

3. This was not a suicide blast at all.

Though reports say the blast took place in front of a Shiite Mosque, however, it does not appeared to be aimed at the mosque. They could have done that inside it, if they wish to do so.

Lets not blame Taliban or Alqeada for this alone. We can not avoid thinking about a "third party" involved in this barbaric incident. An "external hand" indeed.
