Pervez’s trip to US cost Pakistan $1m

Washington: Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf’s recent 18-day visit to the US, which was flayed by opposition leaders including Benazir Bhutto for being a trip with the sole objective of launching his book may have cost Pakistan’s exchequer up to $1 million.
The trip is being described as one of the most expensive undertaken by any Pakistani head of state in the entire history of the country.
According to the Daily Times, 28 limousines plus two vans were hired for the delegation which cost the Pakistani taxpayer $375,000. While some limousines were placed on duty round the clock, others were hired for ten-hour shifts.
On the first leg of the visit, barring some members of the media, the entire delegation stayed at one of the district’s most-expensive hotel — the Four Seasons — where a single room costs $500 plus.
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft carrying the president remained parked in New York and for a couple of days in Washington. The president also toured Texas for a physical check-up. In calculating costs, what needs to be taken into account is how much revenue PIA lost by the 18-day withdrawal of an aircraft from commercial flights. If airport parking charges and fuel costs are added, the figure would surely cross $1 million. ANI
