People should arrive on Mars in 2025 | Elon Musk, SpaceX | Code Conference 2016

Launch 2024..arrive 2025 if all goes to plan

• if spacex succeed in sending humans to Mars then still NASA will send humans to Mars or they will look somewhere else ??

• these 4 humans won't survive for a long time considering the the lack of protection in outer space, there are gamma rays, high-energy protons from the Sun, and cosmic rays from exploding stars etc..these 4 colonists will be more like an experiment & probably spacex will learn a lot from the first colonists & make some changes for the future colonists so they don't cope with same problems or reduce the effects in some ways..

• spacex should sort out gravity prob, till now there is no solution to fix this prob.. without earth like gravity you will face a lot of problems out there.. artificial gravity will work fine..

I believe with his reusable rockets there has been talk of launching a vehicle with meter+ hollow walls that can be filled with water (you will need to drink anyway) similar to the protection at nuclear power plants. As for solar flares and other things you mentioned..there is nothing that can fully protect you from those.

NASA will probably not go to Mars then.

I appreciate his work at Tesla for contributing so much for the development of electric car and bring a change to the old fashioned and adamant automotive industry around the globe, battery technology and also autonomous drive. However I fail to understand his recent obsession with this useless project of sending people to Mars... Why do we need to go to Mars and in this process they will use so many human lives do they not need any approval from board of ethics when the experiment involves living human beings with grave consequence. As a medical student we need such permissions even for cadavers.

It will be a lot safer to live underground..walls filled with water won't protect them 100%, if it serve the purpose of shielding colonists from violent rays then all is good & water can be extracted from the surface of Mars to meet the supply & demand...it will be interesting to see humans living on Mars & sending videos back to earth :D

What exactly they would be doing on mars? That they cannot do in

Sahara desert
Thar desert
Saudi desert
Sudan desert

Pretty much anybody who boards a rocket with tons of explosive fuel knows what can happen if something goes wrong. Ronald Reagan was highly highly highly criticized (rightly so) for allowing a civilian teacher to board the Space Shuttle Challenger and thus meeting a horrible end.

If Musk allows anybody who is not a NASA astronaut onboard there will be the same criticism. He has even hinted that he himself may take a orbital flight in the next few years. This of course rings alarm bells with everybody since if anything happens SpaceX will be in trouble. I'm sure his answer
will be that if he is going to send people to their possible doom he may as well be brave enough himself.

This Elon Musk guy has so much ego he should run for president. He stole the Tesla name for his cars. Tesla was 1000 times the man he is.

.
his falcon 9 still not qualified as human-rated yet. i highly doubt he will have human-rated for mars in 2025 with brand new bigger rocket that still only exist on paper.

omg so much hate in this thread. That guy is blowing investor money and his money. Why the heck are so many people riled up here is beyond reason.

Appropriate steps would be taken to ensure the humans sent are adequately trained and they would be made completely aware of the consequences and risk they face. Once a deal is reached between any human and spacex for the trip, govt cannot do anything other than setting up some norms and guidelines. What you are pointing to is not even the top 10 challenge in this mission.

Keep up that mindset and I can assure you nothing innovative will ever come out of your brain till you go 5 feet under.

I'll believe it when I see it.

As if musk owes anything to you.

Sue him.

The human rated rocket will be a different series itself. Falcon 9s are for LEO missions.

Overly ambitious muscle flexing. The project serves no real purpose and won't succeed.

How did he steal his name? Are you nuts :hitwall:  Instead he honoured him by branding his car after the great scientist and reminded us of his important work which had receded in past. He could have named it after anyone Thomas Edison, Feyeman etc. That's the great thing about America that we can do what we want as we are not ruled by a dictator.

Thread bump.

Five years more.

The launch, transit, arrival and landing may be possible by then. We were discussing that nice vid posted by @Itachi about those modular wheels when can work in ones as excavation-site-finders, or join other wheels to create a robotic excavator or work in twos to create a 3d-printed habitat. That vid also had nice ideas about the habitat itself.
