At danger of derailing the thread I was being sarcastic. No, the British did not do this for our sakes but as empire builders they invested and improved their empire to make it strong. Inadvertently helping us. My swipe was at people who claim South Asia was some economic hyperwar before the British came. It was not. Most of the population was semi-naked, destitute and weak with a sliver of ruling class living like 'Moghuls'. If those who ruled South Asia prior to British arrival had invested in their people insteading of building love momuments the region would have been a economic and military vortex that would have eaten up and spat out the bones of the few Anglos who came around sniffing for empire.
