US intelligence on Chinese military matters is predictably very poor ... and they have demonstrated this through the years. In 2005, a relatively old Chinese conventional submarine literally surfaced in the middle of the Kitty Hawk CBG while it was on active training . In 2009, Robert Gates said the J-20 would only become operational in the mid 2020s. To me, most of the intelligence gathered is worse than what you would find on Chinese military forums or corresponding social media rumors ... the only advantage US intelligence has is it can observe Chinese missile tests (including of hypersonic vehicles) via ELINT but that is about it. Someone like @Deino or @Blitzo could have written a far better report than they did (even though the Pentagon wasted 154k dollars on this).
