A new Air Force One presidential transport has appeared in the latest version of the Pentagon’s aviation plans, marking the first time the Pentagon has included a replacement for the long-serving Boeing 747 jet transport.

Installation of new, sensitive communications equipment could begin on the aircraft as soon as 2019, according to the Pentagon.

The plans don’t specify a specific aircraft model, but it could be an updated executive version of the 747, known in military service as the VC-25.

Inclusion of the presidential transport “is significant,” said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the Teal Group. “It doesn’t happen very often and there are some enabling new technologies.”

Air Force Secretary Michael Donley said last year the service would need to look at replacing its two VC-25s later this decade.

“We have recognized for several years now that the Air Force One replacement is out there in our future in the late teens,” Donley said during a Sept. 19, 2011, briefing at an Air Force Association conference.

The two aircraft that serve as Air Force One began flying in 1990 and 1991, respectively, according to a service fact sheet.

Lol maybe get an A-380. :D

I heard not all airports have runways long enough for it though.

Wasn't really being serious. A-380 certainly have enough space, but boeing doesn't have an equivalent.
So would it be another 747, or something newer?

In the article it is mentioned that it will be an updated version of 747.It can be 747,DC-8-72,C 17 but i guess not an Airbus.

What makes you think they will go for an European product?
Why not? Look at it this way: Staying with an American manufacturer would be a matter of national pride. But technical and tactical considerations overrides all. If it is clear that an Airbus is the superior, have no doubt that all parts necessary for the Presidential transport fleet will be under complete American control.

I understand your point but wont going for a European product have a negative reaction in the United States as not only is it a matter of pride but people will view it as yet another oppurtunity going to a foreign company and creating jobs elsewhere? Moreover Airbus is not interested as per this article:-

EADS waves off bid for Air Force One replacement

I would personally like to see the 747-8 or 787 to replace the 747-200s.

Its not that exactly. Airbus refused to even offer their jet, because as per requirment the aircraft is suppose to be built in US and to Airbus it doesn't make any sense strategically and financially to make 2-3 airplanes in a totally new country.

It will be 747-8I (very likely) or 787 (possibly)

IF it ever come to that, the spinmeisters can play it as a sign of US reliance upon our allies, so much that we are willing to place the physical security of our President...blah...blah...blah...You know what I mean...

You have a liking for A380 or Airbus i can sense ;)

. . .
Airbus looks gay to me. They should go for greener 787 instead of 747.
