Srinagar: Little Hazilla raises her hands and says, “I want to ask Mehbooba aunty what I had done, why I was shot at with pellets.”
A pretty girl in hijab and pink dress, nine years of age, Hazilla has been in SMHS hospital since ten days for treatment of pellet injuries in her left eye. She keeps asking her mother, “Asi Kar Din Chutti? (When will we be relieved?)”
“Soon,” her mother replies every time, hiding her grief.
The “doll like” Hazilla lives in Nanar village near Tral, the hometown of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. In south Kashmir where “pro-freedom” rallies have become routine, a huge rally was taken out by people of the area ten days ago.
“My daughter and some other kids were playing in the lawn of the government primary school at Nanar,” said her mother, Hanifa. “The school is situated along the road on which people were marching in hordes. Suddenly, forces arrived at the spot and fired indiscriminately. There was chaos all around.”
Hanifa said her some people brought her daughter to her house. “I thought she was dead. The people told me she had been hit by pellets. I along with some relatives took her to Tral hospital, where doctors said she needed to go to SMHS, Srinagar”.
Hazilla, a Class 4 student, said in Kashmiri, “Be aesis gindaan, army aaye te lagovekh mae pellet, mae loag daab (I was playing. The army came and fired pellets. I fell down unconscious.”
The attention of everyone in the ward is occupied by the “cute-looking” girl. People came up to ask this reporter, “What had this fairy-like girl done?”
There can be no answer to such a question, except, she is innocent, she is innocent.
