Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif has said peace in the country was the outcome of countless sacrifices of the people and Pakistan Army.

“Your attendance in great numbers in the festival is laudable and depictive of a resilient nation,” a statement issued by the military’s media wing, ISPR, quoted General Raheel as saying during the Shandur Polo Festival in Chitral district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

The thrilling polo festival, which dates back to 1936, is not only enjoyed by locals, but also inland and foreign visitors.

“The Shandur Festival is not only a good omen for the growth of national and international tourism in the country but it is also a clear indication for terrorists that the Pakistani nation will continue its traditions alive without any fear,” the army chief said in his address to participants of the annual festival.

The COAS said the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb will continue across the country for the lasting peace and stability.

“The success of this operation, however, depends on the nation’s support and the leading role of the country’s youth.”

General Raheel reiterated terrorists and their facilitators are being chased out across the country and Pakistan will soon be recognised for its better education facilities, peace and progress in the world.

The army chief also lauded the role of different institutions of the Pakistan Army and local government for facilitating the people of G-B and Chitral by providing rescue and relief activities in the region in wake of natural disasters.

The festival, now a global spectacle, attracts thousands of local and foreign tourists and is traditionally played between the teams of Gilgit and Chitral from July 7 to July 9.

Though it is an annual event, it was cancelled last year due to floods that triggered infrastructural damage.

In 2014, players from G-B refused to participate due to differences with the people of Chitral over the ownership of the Shandur Pass.

In 2016, there was a possibility of conflict as well. However, the Frontier Corps made efforts to make the event possible.

Pakistan has came out of those difficult phase when there was attacks by Ttp, etc on almost daily basis. Thanks to the resilient people and tremendous efforts of armed forces and Intel agencies.

But there is plenty of work remaining, there is still alot to do before situation becomes normal.

Attacks are now the exception than the norm. If Pakistan carries on the fight, reforms the madrasa system and grows economically, it will reap the rewards.

Indeed Salute to the people who despite everything have overcome this. :pakistan::smitten::pakistan:

I'm not Anti Madrasa. There is also no BS in the fact there are many seminaries that openly preach hatred of Shia, Sufis, the government and the army.
Forget Madrasas, we even have the Lal Majid in the heart of the capital city that preaches terrorism......

Umm, which madarsas are doing that? Madarasas that are respected or madarasas that no one gives a damn about?

Is there any documented proof that Lal Masjid is preaching terrorism?

The undocumented ones that preach in the dark, that's the ones I am on about.

That happened nearly a decade ago, what I am looking for is, the proof that they are preaching terrorism.
The undocumented do not actually qualify as Madarasas buddy.

At independence in 1947, there were only 137 madrassas (seminaries) in Pakistan. By 1956 the number had almost doubled. Under Pakistan’s first military ruler, Ayub Khan, an Auqaf Department was created to regulate shrines and madrassas so as to bring them and their funding under state control. Ayub also proposed a series of reforms that called for introducing the same primary school education syllabus for madrassas as that provided in government schools. These reforms were rejected by all the religious parties and thus failed to be implemented

Since then, no genuine attempt has been made by any government to bring Madrassas under govt. control Today there are between 40-50 thousand Madrassas in Pakistan (most of them unregistered). As per SPDC report (2003) , 70 % of Madrassas are run by Deobandi sect (the hardliners) affiliated with Wafaq-ul-Madaris Al-Arabia (one of the five madrassah boards in Pakistan) despite the fact that Deobandis make up less than 10 % of Pakistan's (total)population. There is no uniform curriculum or set of teachings across these five types of madrassa. While officially there is a standard madrassa curriculum known as the Dars-e-Nizami each type of madrassa follows its own exclusive texts with their specific and sectarian interpretations of Islamic teachings.

These Madrassas are not under the control of govt. and they receive heavy foreign funding, They are independent and they don't have to rely on govt. for anything . Article 20 (concerning Fundamental Rights) of Pakistan's constitution states :

(b) Every religious denomination and every sect thereof shall have the right to establish, maintain and manage its religious institutions.

Without amending the constitution, it is almost impossible for the government to bring Madrassas under "effective" control of the state ... And even a "talk" of amending any Islamic provision of the constitution draws a huge public outrage in Pakistan . (As we saw during Musharraf's era) ..

We are stuck in a bad situation, esp. when 82% of those belonging to Deobandi madrassas see the Taliban as a model for Islamizing Pakistan as per survey (Ali, 2010).

Research done by the Pakistan based Social Policy and Development Center (SPDC) revealed that only 6% of madrassa students cite religious reasons for attending madrassas, while 89% cited economic reasons (The State of education Report, 2002-03, SPDC, 2003, p.161).

The government can increase its Education budget and provide financial aid to these students and encourage them to join public schools instead ..
