Payra thermal power plant inaugurated today
Patuakhali representative
Last page 21 March 2022, Monday

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the country's largest pigeon thermal power plant at Dhankhali in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali today. The two units inaugurated in the first phase will generate 1320 MW of electricity. Inadequacy of the grid and non-construction of transmission lines will add only half of the capacity to the national grid.

All kinds of preparations have already been made for the arrival of the Prime Minister. Project Director (Chief Engineer) Shah Abdul Maula (Helal) has confirmed that the Prime Minister will officially announce 100% electrification among 100% of the people of the country on this day. He said 622 (six hundred and twenty two) megawatts of electricity generated from this thermal power plant has been commercially connected to the national grid. A 160 km transmission line was constructed from Gopalganj to Payra port. But the construction of transmission line from Gopalganj grid to Amin Bazar in Dhaka is in progress.

The construction of the line is expected to be completed by December this year. The center will go into full production as soon as the construction of the river crossing line at Padma is completed.

It is learned that Exim Bank of China and China Development Bank have given about 80 percent loan for the project costing Tk 12,284 crore. The payment of which has already started. The source also confirmed that there is no problem in repaying the loan (installment) till December with commercial power supply and capacity payment from one unit.

Payra thermal power plant executive engineer (construction) said. Redwan Iqbal Khan said that the latest technology is being used to protect the environment from the use of coal. There are comprehensive security measures for workers.

After loading the coal cargo directly to the terminal, it is being delivered directly to Coal Door through the conveyor using the latest technology. There is basically all the processing of power generation. That is why there is no chance of environmental catastrophe here.

He said the Payra 1,320 MW thermal power plant is the largest mega project in the country so far. Bangladesh is now the 13th country in the world to use ultra supercritical technology. The efficiency of the energy efficient environment friendly clean coal technology power plant is 44.29 percent.

Flu gas desalination (FGD) has been set up with power plants to control sulfur emissions. A 99 percent efficient electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been integrated with the power plant to reduce fly ash.

It may be mentioned that in June 2014, Bangladesh-China Power Company Ltd. was formed by signing a joint agreement between North West Power Generation Company on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation on behalf of the Government of China.

The construction work of Payra Thermal Power Station started in June 2015 by acquiring 1,015 acres of land in Dhankhali of Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali. Chinese contractor NEPC started the main work of construction of the power plant in March 2016. On December 6, 2020, the electricity generated at the center was commercially connected to the national grid.

The efficiency of a normal coal-fired power plant is 37%, but the efficiency is 44.29% for Payra because ultra supercritical technology has been used in this plant.

This technology produces less amount of sulphur, fly ash and other hazardous matters. It also raises the heat efficiency of a plant from 37% to 44.29%.

Fly ash is the biggest source of hazardous chemicals including toxic chemicals such as arsenic, barium, cadmium, nickel and lead, among others. This plant will produce less quantity of fly ash.

However, fly ash is a component also for producing Portland cement. So, whatever may be its production here, it will be bought/ collected by the cement companies.

I can't stop laughing, this is Gold

Wang Wei did a heck of a nice rendition as an amateur singer - bless her heart. Better than some Bengali women - I'd say. 8-)

Here is the original.

And what a cool gesture of friendship, reaching out across cultural divides....trying to learn our culture.

I'd like to see some Bengali women try some songs in Mandarin and see how that pans out... :-)

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said every house of the country now came under electrification as she announced cent percent electricity coverage while inaugurating the 1,320 MW Payra Thermal Power Plant, the largest of its kind.
"This is the biggest thing that we have been able to light houses of every people," she said at a function in Patuakhali.

With opening the coal-fired Payra thermal power plant with eco-friendly Ultra-Supercritical Technology, Bangladesh has achieved another milestone implementing the government's pledge to bring 100 percent people under electricity coverage by "Mujib Borsho" which is going to end on March 31.

The prime minister called the March a month of achievement of Bangalees, saying that her government has been able to open the power plant at this month while the nation is observing the "Mujib Borsho" marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Golden Jubilee of the country's Independence.

The premier said that the power plant is the gift for the nation ahead of the holy Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Sheikh Hasina thanked the Chinese president and the prime minister for their cooperation in setting up the Payra power plant.

The prime minister, in person, visited the district for the first time to open the power plant built here since Bangladesh likewise the world has been rattled with the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Payra power plant was built on 1,000 acres of land at a cost of US$ 2.48 billion beside the Rabnabad River at Kalapara Upazila of the southern Patuakhali district and Bangladesh has become 13th country among the world in using the ultra-supercritical technology in producing power.

The first 660 MW unit of the power plant went into commercial operation in May, 2020, utilising the 400KV Payra-Gopalganj Power Transmission while the second one started operation in December 2021.

At least she tried. But, the musicians were bad. Is Wang Wei a famous singer. I tried to find. There are a few piano works by Wang Wei, but I don(t know if she is the same person.

No - I think she is just a Payra Powerplant employee. The Band is native for the employees. They are amateur musicians.

Bhai BNP will say "All is $hit."

AL will say "All is Gold".

The truth is somewhere in between.

But you have to see, corruption or not, things have been done.

Bridges, Powerplants and Export Zones are standing there, fact is fact.

The problem with BNP folks is - they could not any share of the bribe percentage LOOTed. That is all the moaning is about.

In BNP times, none of these development happened.

Where does this plant source its coal from? Hopefully it's a locked in long-term contract so prices don't get out of hand.

By the way - Bangladesh was already edging closer to 100% this time last year. The fact that we have all citizens accessing electricity right now is no surprise.

Indonesia for now, maybe also Australia later. But yes, long term contracts are a must.

BTW - Bangladesh is moving away from running older coal generation powerplants, some plants will be scrapped and LNG/Petroleum plants will take their place.

Long term coal contract is also fluctuated, not a fixed price. Oil and gas long term contract is also fluctuated. Most producers always prefer fluctuated long term deal. It is rare nowadays to have fixed price for long term energy contract.

Most possibly BD has it from Indonesia, like many countries in region ( Malaysia, Philippine, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, China, India, Pakistan)
