CHANDIGARH: As part of celebrations of its 250 years of raising, a 20-member contingent of Parachute Regiment (Special Force) 1 Para (SF), the oldest unit of Indian Army, is undertaking a mountaineering expedition to Mount Bhagirathi-II. The contingent led by Major S S Rajpurohit was flagged off on Thursday from the western command.
The ceremony was attended by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the western command, Lt Gen S R Ghosh, who presented a symbolic ice axe to team
leader along with the national flag and the flag of the regiment undertaking the expedition.
Lt Gen Ghosh and other senior officers of the command were briefed about the expedition planning by the team leader. GOC-in-C interacted with the team before the start. Major Hem Chandra Singh is deputy leader of the team that was trained at Manali and Army Mountaineering Institute (AMI), Siachin Base Camp, in two phases.
Mount Bhagirathi-II is one of the peak of Bhagirathi Parwat located in Garhwal hills about 30kms from Gangotri. It is a group of three peaks out of which Bhagirathi-II stands at a height of 6512m.
Bhagirathi Parwat stands at and dominates the end of the valley up to Gaumukh which is end of Gangotri glacier and source of Ganga river.
The upper part of Ganga river is also called Bhagirathi. The team will take 23 days to summit the peak. The summit is planned from May 21 to May 23.
