Pakistan's position on drones is clear: FO

ISLAMABAD. Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Tasnim Aslam on Thursday did not confirm the pre-dawn strikes in North Waziristan as drone attacks, but said Pakistan’sposition on drones is clear.

During a briefing of the FO, when asked about the successive Mir Ali aerial strikes that killed 16 alleged militants late Wednesday and early Thursday, she said the facts surrounding the attack are being determined.

“The nature of the attacks is being ascertained,” she said, without clarifying whether the strike was carried out by a US drone or Pakistani military machinery. “Pakistan’s position on drone attacks is clear.”

In the past, the government has strongly condemned drone strikes – maintaining a stance that strikes violate the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The FO and government have previously raised concern over drone strikes with the US administration and at the United Nations, saying that drone strikes are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives and have human rights and humanitarian implications.

Two successive US drone strikes killed at least 16 suspected militants in Pakistan's northwest tribal area early Thursday, where pressure was building on Islamabad to react after the brazen attack on Karachi airport.

The last drone attack on Pakistani soil occurred on December 25, 2013, killing three suspected militants. The strikes had been temporarily halted at the government's request.
