The country’s population has increased to 184 million this year from 119 million in 1990 with an annual growth rate of more than two per cent, says a latest State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) report.

The country makes more than two-and-a-half per cent of the world’s population.

According to the report, the country’s population growth rate has been declining since the nineties but its contribution towards world’s population increased from 2.25 per cent in 1990 to 2.69 per cent in 2010. Moreover, Pakistan has got the highest average fertility rate for 2005-2010 along with the highest household (HH) size (6.8) and the second highest density after India amongst the six most populous countries. “This is despite the fact that various governments have tried to contain high population growth rate.”

The reports also says Pakistan is currently in the third stage of demographic transition of moderate growth where birth rate and death rate both decline and the pace of increase in population gets slow. According to it, crude birth rate in the country declined from 37 per 1,000 persons in 1961 to just above 28 per 1,000 persons in 2009 and crude death rate from 12 per 1,000 persons in 1961 to 7.6 per 1,000 persons in 2009, showing a declining trend in natural increase in population.

Why would you be happy with population growing at a rapid rate? You think the current govt is even going to pay attention to the kids? Who will educate this growing rate? Where will these people go? The major cities are already filled and Pakistan is a very small country. It's time condoms and birth control pills are distributed to the masses and people are educated on this matter.

Good one(bolded)... we used to have a "Hum do Hamare do" slogan... lots of TV ads back in the old days on dukhdarshan... not sure how many ads are there today.

But I see the growth rate is much higher amongst the poorer and uneducated sections whereas the urban population has restricted to one or two these days... (shield technology is being effective )... uneducated people just abandon shield giving various excuses. Govt should be persistent with the shield or other means on both sides of the border. This will start to hinder our growth after some point.

I wonder how accurate is the SBP's statistical methodology. Normally, there are too many extrapolations used to arrive at the figures. Historical trends are used where current data is not available. This means for eg if yearly growth is known for the year 1998, then they use the same growth for the next year which is only approximate and cannot be used for later years. Of course I am grossly simplifying as there are more advanced statistical methods. However with a math background I can say, no amount of statistics can determine the exact number. We should be conducting a census soon to give us the exact picture and other details such as income and education levels. It was supposed to have been carried out back in 2008 but has been kept delayed for long. Yet another lethargic and carefree attitude from our PPP government. :frown:
