Pakistan's fruits export up by six percent in 10 months

ISLAMABAD: The export of fruits from the country witnessed an increase of 6.37 percent during the first 10 months of current fiscal year against the exports of the corresponding period of last year.

The fruits'' export from the country were recorded at $ 380.869 million during July-April (2018-19) against the exports of $358.062 million during July-April (2017-18), showing a growth of 6.37 percent, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

In terms of quantity, the export of the fruits witnessed an increase of 10.65 percent from 721,146 metric tons to 651,758 metric ton, according to the data.

On the other hand, the vegetables exports from the country witnessed a decrease of 1.18 percent by going down from $203.257 million last year to $200.859 during the current fiscal year.

In terms of quantity, the exports from the country also witnessed increase of 17.62 percent from 739,940 metric ton to 870,298 metric ton, according to the data.

Meanwhile, on year-on-year basis, the fruits export witnessed decrease of 35.63 percent during the month of April 2019 when compared to the same month of last year.

The fruits exports in April 2019 were recorded at $ 11.745 million against the exports of $18.246 million in April 2018, the PBS data revealed.

On month-on-month basis, the exports of fruits also decreased by 58.23 percent in April 2019 when compared to the exports of $28.117 million in March 2019.

Similarly, the vegetables exports on year-on-year basis increased by 6.09 percent, from $30.634 million in April 2018 to $32.501 million in April 2019.

On month-on-month basis, the vegetables exports also witnessed increase of 8.39 percent in April 2019 when compared to the exports of $29.986 million in March 2019, according to the data.

I think the key is value added. Processed foods are more valuable then simple agricultural commodities. For example, flavored yogurt more valuable then milk. Flavored dried packaged mangoes can be far more profitable then simple fruit export. Their also less waste because drying reduces spoilage.

No Joke, Pakistan has the best fruits in the world. The only place that can kind of compete is Korea and only in persimmon and strawberries.

Where I am now, we get Pakistani seasonal fruits and it's amazing and super cheap.
Spanish mandarins go for like $3 a kg while better quality Pakistani mandarins are less than $1.

I think Pakistani fruits are under priced, they need to bump the price a bit more and start moving into the premium market as our fruits are clearly premium.

Domestic consumption has decreased due to inflation so exports will likely to increase as our poor public have not enough money to buy fruits.I have not consumed any fruit for months and this Ramazan as fruits are not within my buying power .

Economy is not a priority. Buying fighter jets to fight india is our priority. There's the famous speech by an American president regarding the cost of war:

I agree, but one difference is visible. Half the time the Pakistani fruit is over-ripened or already rotten. Like if you get a box of 10 mangoes at least 2 will be sub-par quality. Then the packaging is very low class, unappealing with plenty of cheap graphics etc. What is the use of having large flashy text in Urdu when you are trying to appeal to a foreign market.

Need better packaging and quality control, and reduce farm-to-market time so that fruit is not wasted before the consumer buys it. I read somewhere that Pakistan wastes more fruit during transportation than what most countries even produce. It is astonishing that this is happening, we are not a massive country in terms of land mass. Transportation shouldn't be taking this long. We need cold storages for food products and chilled trucks. Often times in Pak fruit is transported in open-air trucks no wonder fruit is being wasted when it is kept under direct sunlight in 40C temperature for a week or so.

To me this goes to Pakistani culture of shortsightedness.
If you offer a Pakistani $1 now or $100 later, they will take the $1.
Invest in modern agriculture technology and the dividend will be so much more than the peanuts they make now.

The Dutch are exceptional when it comes to trading and exporting. There is a saying about the Dutch. They were borne to trade and commerce. Their mind revolves around exports. Day and night.

Making a comparison with a developing nation like Pakistan is unfair. Pakistan has super potential and this needs to be unearthed. The Europeans have been trading for decades and they have built their own massive trading blocs with subsidies and free trade agreements etc. Pakistan doesn’t have those incentives. More importantly, we never had leaders who prioritized trade. Our leaders prioritized looting, indebting and selling out the nation. In other words, stagnation and underdevelopment. Finally we have some ray of hope with a new government which is willing to recognize these important issues. This won’t happen overnight for Pakistan. First the economy needs years of recovering after brutal misuse. We also need to look at our main exports. Apart from agriculture, apparel and a few other areas we don’t have much export. The focus should be to increase the export options. We need to learn from nations that had nothing and went on to build massive brands like Samsung, Huawei etc. We need to invest massively in higher quality education.
