What's new

Pakistan's ecommerce industry is heading towards a bleak future

. . .
Few years ago, US pass law to charge Tax on online sales. Nothing new.

This is a misstatement. The US Supreme Court decided a case that states could require remote sellers to charge sales tax across state lines. Not the same as a federal sales tax.

Gov should ask for taxes but only when they provide sufficient infrastructure to support that industry. We don't even have any payment gateway to receive e-commerce payments and gov is looking for taxes.

That's not how it works. You pay tax for the right to do business. Otherwise you don't do business. Even in ancient times you paid tax to the king regardless of your own status.

If you don't know how an e-commerce business works, then don't comment on the topic. You clearly have no idea how many countries are giving huge tax incentives for such businesses everywhere while our gov is trying to suck up every penny they can. The biggest example is Amazon which is paying zero corporate tax and they have all the infrastructure to operate without a hitch.

They don't want to pay taxes. Not the masses nor companies. That is just a fact.

You blame the government for taking every penny when the nation is burdened with insane amounts of debt? This is not how things work. The people don't pay taxes. It is no secret that the corporate sector also doesn't pay its share. E-commerce can wait. The loans cannot.

We are a people who move our assets out of Pakistan. We like to invest in Dubai and other destinations. Capital flight is what we love. We don't pay taxes. We resort to corruption and love the undocumented economy. Not to give any government a free pass, but the people are definitely guilty.

The difference is that Amazon is a USA company, getting incentives from the USA government because the USA government has interest in USA companies monopolizing the worlds markets creating both profit and jobs in the USA. They do this to suck up the money from all over the world. Do you think the USA subsidizes Pakistani or Chinese vendors?

I remember in Brooklyn in the late 90’s If you wanted to sell drugs in the neighborhood, you had to pay the OG his cut. Government is no different.

I've probably forgotten more about it than you'll know. You think Amazon is an example to follow in terms of taxation? Amazon is a leach. It provides a great platform, it provides some shitty minimum wage jobs, meanwhile it pays little to no tax anywhere it operates. The people who sell on it pay fees as well as taxes.

Why should we give anyone tax exception?

You'll also remember then that everyone paid tax, even the drug dealers. The front businesses used to launder the drug money paid tax.
