Pakistanis are divided in their attitude towards India

Islamabad, May 11: Pakistanis are divided almost equally in their attitudes towards India in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks though a slender majority of 52 percent have an "unfavourable" perception of the neighbouring country, according to a survey released on Monday.

Asked about the image of India during the poll conducted in March by US-based International Republican Insititute, 45 percent had a favourable opinion of the country while 52 percent had an unfavourable perception.

IRI said its poll explored attitudes among Pakistanis regarding the Mumbai terror attacks.

Asked if they believed it was true that the attacks were carried out by the outlawed Lashker-e-Taiba, only seven per cent of Pakistanis replied yes, another seven percent replied maybe and 78 percent said no.

In response to another question as to who they thought was responsible for the attacks, the top three replies were India (42 percent), I don't know (33 percent) and America (20 percent).

Asked what should happen to those involved in the attack if it was proven that it was carried out by LeT, five percent said the accused should be turned over to India while 82 percent said they should be tried and punished in Pakistan. Seven percent refused to reply.

However, a majority of Pakistanis were opposed to LeT, al Qaeda and other terrorists using Pakistan as a base to launch attacks against India, with 79 percent saying this would be a "serious problem" and 17 percent saying it would not be.

Asked about their opinion of the LeT, 43 percent of respondents said they had a favourable opinion of the group while 46 percent said they had an unfavourable opinion of the organisation.

India has blamed Pakistan-based elements, including the LeT, for the attacks in Mumbai that killed over 180 people in November last year. After months of denial, Pakistan acknowledged that Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured for the attacks, was a Pakistani national.

Five LeT operatives arrested by the Pakistani authorities for alleged involvement in the attacks are currently facing trial.

India has linked the resumption of the stalled bilateral peace process to the punishment of the perpetrators of the attacks by Pakistan.

I guess Zaid Hamid really is popular in Pakistan (42 Percent believe it was Indians who conducted the attacks) as he is the only one pointing towards India even when Pak Govt. has admitted that Kasab is Pakistani and Nepal has debunked another conspiracy theory. GoP has Five LeT operatives arrested for alleged involvement in the attacks are currently facing trial.

20 percent accuse US - Now that really is creative.

43% is HUGE support for a confirmed terrorist group. South Asia is in trouble.

How about getting a poll in India about Pakistan? I am sure Indians are no where close to being as magnanimous as our 45%.

That's true a majority of Indians do not have a favorable view of Pakistan but the question asked was not about having ffavourable view of India but having support for terrorist organization.

Anyways survey / poll has been held in India about Pakistan, but one special finding, We are not the numero uno adversaries in Asia. China and Japan have much stronger negative opinion about each other. Visit the link to get the details if interested.

A real eye opener and a very good gauge for reading the mind of the average Pakistani. The non English speaking non elite part whose opinion matters most !

Only 9% have a very favourable attitude towards India and a full 33% have a very non favourable attitude. That is really a stunning figure. However I must say, that the opinion on the streets of India would be similar.

What is more worrying is the 'soft' support of Taliban, the support for implemention of Sharia nationwide, the lack of support for the army against the Taliban and the lack of support for the Americans and Pakistans participation in the war in Afghanistan !

The huge support for Nawaz Sharief , the lack of support for Parvez Musharraf is something I fail to understand. Then again , I am looking from a standard elitist, english educated, non Pakistani, non traditional muslim view point

The demographics of the population chosen for the survey has been mentioned. IRI has been working in Pakistan since 2002 and has colleced opinions across the nation.

With all due respect to your organization, it is not the right method to conduct a survey by just taking opinions from a single source. It has to be diversified. Also I have posted a detailed survey report in National Politics section and it is quite reflective of the opinions of Pakistanis and the trends of their support.

It would be better if you conducted a proper debate on the methodology of the survey or distortion of results but you rather choose to make a smart star star star comment and think your patriotic duty is performed. I am not saying this is a gospel of truth but surely it does carry some merit.
