Pakistani teenager 'gang raped on orders of village council'

A 19-year-old Pakistani woman has been gang raped on the orders of a village council for the "crime" of marrying a man of her own choosing, according to local media.

The Express Tribune reports that the girl was gang raped by three members of the council and that the local police refused to register her complaint:

R*, the gang-rape victim, said she and F* married of their own free-will two-and-a-half months ago. However, she added, the village elders and leaders did not approve of the marriage as they had married of our own choice.

The elders then called a panchayat, or village council, which ordered her gang rape. Three members of that council then gang-raped her, she added.

There are reports that police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged sexual assault.

Sadly, these crimes are common in Pakistan where more than 1,000 women a year are victims of honour killings.

Earlier this year Pakistani police arrested 25 members of a village council for allegedly ordering the rape of a 16-year-old girl.

For all social, moral and cultural purpose...Pakistan is is still a hindoo state which has adapted barbarized Hinduism..the Islam of Arabia is far different than Islam of Pakistan..the hindu backwardism lives deep inside us...just that it has dropped the safron color and adopted the green dye.

Something cannot be purged with education but only force...I have far more educated people adhering to backward customs rather than so called illiterate people..

Yes, I entirely agree with you but as somebody who was brought up in the west things are not as 'clean' as they look. The number of young girls who are subjected to sex under drink is enormous. Peer pressure and drink mask what in fact is rape. Society has so sexulized the context that next morning women just pull on their knickers and accept "yesternight" as another bad choice. Then we have men in positions of power going around bumming anything with curves like Harvey Weinstien. Rape is rape even if has expensive scent of Hugo Boss as opposed to donkey dung.

This is sickening to the stomach. A woman has a right to choose her choice of partner and so does a man. This overbearing practice of forceful or pressurising is wrong and harmful. I hope these scavengers are arrested, trialed and thrown behind bars!

I am apt to believe it in absence of strong contrary information simply because crap like this happens in Pakistan. The story of this rape is familiar in Pakistan as the story of some young girl in the west is pressed to drink, drink, drink and then when she reaches tipping point the guy has his way. Ask me not how I know this for I was once young and full of it.
