Norwegian Ambassador to Pakistan Cecilie Landsverk has said that Pakistan is on the priority list of Norway with special focus on trade and investment and energy. She was talking to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Farooq Iftikhar here on Friday. Other office-bearers of the LCCI were also present on the occasion.

She said that since a second recession has hit Europe in recent years therefore there is a widespread understanding that Asia is the future of the world and many countries are fast developing their relations with Asia. Pakistan is very close to the hearts of the Norwegians as a large number of Pakistanis are residing in Norway and contributing to our welfare, she added.

The Ambassador said that Norway has good expertise in hydro power and it is ready to extend co-operation but an active engagement of authorities is absolutely necessary in this area of mutual interest. She said that Pakistan has fantastic potential, it can generate huge electricity through its hydropower resources to tackle energy shortfall.

Hydropower is the best way to bridge the gap between electricity generation and consumption which will improve the ratio of low-cost electricity in the system to stabilise the tariff, said Cecilie Landsverk. She said that Norwegian investors are also interested in promising onshore and offshore gas sectors of Pakistan. Landsverk advised Pakistani business community to focus on food chains and quality goods if it is interested in doing business in Norway.

ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a roundtable conference viewed that there was a huge potential of cooperation between Pakistan and Scandinavian countries, which need to be capitalised for their mutual benefit.

The conference was titled ‘Pakistan-Scandinavia: Perceptions, Potential and Pathways’, which was jointly organised by the Institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad and the Pakistan-Norway Association (PANA).

The panellists of the discussion included Swedish Ambassador Lars-Hjalmar Wide, IPS Director General Khalid Rahman, Amir Iftikhar Warraich, , senior Norwegian social scientist Atle Hetland, Migration Group Executive Director Dr Sabiha Syed, Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) country representative Petter Eide, IPS National Academic Council member Air Cdre (r) Khalid Iqbal, and Pakistani-Danish Communication Consultant Hina Akhtar while M Riazul Haque moderated the discussion.

Khalid Rahman, orientating the participants with the brief overview of the Pak-Scandinavia ties, stated that some of the relatively less focused European countries such as Scandinavian states needed greater focus, as being active players in global development cooperation the study of dynamics of Pakistan’s ties with all such countries assumes no less significance.

He said that the total two-way trade between Pakistan and these countries was around $880 million, significant but below the potential that exists, particularly a huge potential exists for enhancing Pakistan’s exports and bringing investments from Scandinavia into Pakistan’s various promising sectors.

ISLAMABAD - Social practice of Pakistani people to take good care of foreigners, alone, could lure plenty of foreign investment provided this potential is known to the global investors.
According to top Danish envoy in Islamabad, Pakistan is perceived as a country not that safe from a security point of view. This is affecting the investment climate and making it difficult to convince foreign investors to focus on the potentials in Pakistan.
"I would like to change the misperception about Pakistan as a country not that safe from the security point of view," said Royal Danish Ambassador Ole E Moesby. In an exclusive interview with Online the Ambassador said he had many pleasant surprises during last three months as he had also come here with the same perception that portrays Pakistan as a "dangerous" country.
Appreciating Pakistan's sacrifices and contributions to the global war against terrorism, the Ambassador said the world still has "high ambitions on the role Pakistan would play in this war.

“Therefore, you need to put your house in order while fighting against terror to appear to the foreign investors as a secure and promising country to foreign investors," he added. The investment friendly policies and estimated rate of return are still preferable over other countries such as India, he added.
Only change of the world view coupled with clean governance could lead Pakistan to enter the bracket of world's fastest growing countries known as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China). "I cherish this group enlarges with Pakistan and BRIC becomes BRIC+P," the Ambassador observed.

VIENTIANE (Laos) Nov 4 (APP): Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Sunday said that Pakistan had investor-friendly policies and the Finnish businessmen should avail the investment opportunities being provided by it. He was talking to Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, who called on him here and held discussions on matters of bilateral interests. Prime Minister Ashraf said that Pakistan desired to further expand the ties between the two countries and appreciated the support being extended by Finland to it in the European Union.

Great initiative Pakistan and Scandinavian countries have been strengthening their ties many years now and lately it has been accelerating. Pakistan needs to move towards relations with Scandinavians countries, Turkey, China, and few others and ignore some other no-good regional countries.

Norway to help Pakistan with hydro-power technology.

no more wahabi and ayatollahs "conditional" investments for Pakistan. They should take their money and religion to places with enough fools to fall for it. 40,000 Citizens have lost their lives due to wahabi / salafi / Imami / Jafari infested menace. PPP gov't deserves commendation for this feat.

No better example can be found in the world. Scandinavian countries are the way to go with

Exactly right, interestingly enough Norway is actual quite a pro-Pakistan country and has had long ties with Pakistan, and has a productive Pakistani diaspora in Norway so there are people-to-people ties. Pakistan should strive to become like Norway and with more cooperation with them Pakistan can learn more in the right direction.

In fact I recently read and article Imran Khan recently visited Scandinavia and said he believes in the Norwegian model of governance. I will post the article.

Demanding an end to Pakistan’s participation in “war against terror” on its western border, Imran thinks that Balochistan issue is also linked to it. Peace on the western border will end foreign support to Baloch insurgency, he believes. For governance models he is impressed with Norway and Sweden welfare states, a

If IK does receive the vote, hopefully he can begin implementing Scandinavian type of reforms, and get us away at least systematically and ideologically away from this region.

By the way have you noticed the striking resemblance between northern Pakistan and Norway?

Finland was a poor country relying on Agriculture just like what Pakistan is doing now.

Here is how they changed themselves starting from education:

What do Pakistani members think about this alignment or developing stronger ties with Scandinavian countries and distancing ourselves from the ME countries and other regional countries?
