America has set an example of pluralism once again as the 116th Congress is being dubbed as the ‘queerest and most diverse in the history’ – powerful, indeed. Changing the course of history, Montgomery committeewoman, Pakistani-American Sadaf Jaffer swore in as the mayor of New Jersey on 3rd January.
She has become the first South Asian-American woman mayor that the town has seen. According to the press release, Jaffer has been a resident of the township for the past five years and was elected to the committee last year.
Sadaf Jaffer is an activist and a scholar who has made valuable contributions towards social justice and human rights activist in the town. She has extensive experience in cultural education and government service. She has previously worked in the United States Marine Corp Center for advanced operational culture learning. She has also worked with the US Department of States Bureau of South Asian affairs.
She also has an extremely dignified and credible educational background. She is currently working as Postdoctoral Research Associate in South Asian studies at Princeton University where she teaches subjects of Islamic, South Asian and Asian American studies. she serves on the board of directors of ARTE (Art And Resistance through Education) as well as Somerset County director for the South Asian American Caucus of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee .
As revealed by a press release, she was also selected to be in the inaugural training class of Emerge New Jersey. With Sadaf’s valuable contributions towards the society she is living in, she also obtained her Bachelors Degree from prestigious Georgetown University and her PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations with a secondary field in Studies of Women, Gender and Sexuality from Harvard University.
One of the most diverse states (if not the most) in the country.
