WASHINGTON: Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman has said that the country is witnessing a great deal of good things like political and societal efforts towards protection of women's rights.

She made it clear it is not just a place about conflicts as often wrongly refracted through the lens of ongoing war in the region.

Sherry was speaking at a reception she hosted in honour of prominent Pakistani women's rights advocate and documentary filmmaker, Samar Minallah, whose distinguished efforts were recognised by Vital Voices Organisation this week.

US special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan Marc Grossman, Coordinator for US non-military assistance for Pakistan Ambassador Robin Raphel, Vital Voices Board Chairperson Susan Davis, American journalists, writers and Pakistani-American women leaders attended the event.

"Conflict indeed brings oppression to people but Pakistan is not all about conflict - it is a place where a great deal is happening at the governmental and civil society levels," she said at a time of lopsided coverage in parts of the Western media through the lens of Afghan war.

The Pakistani envoy referred to the democratic government's efforts to give women their rightful place in society, citing several legislative achievements and the fact today the speaker of the National Assembly and foreign minister of Pakistan are both women.

But women getting elected as parliamentarians or serving at elite government positions is just one aspect of the change taking place in Pakistan, noted the ambassador, who has been a longtime champion both as a writer and a parliamentarian for rights of women, minorities and vulnerable segments of society.

In her remarks, Cambridge University-educated Samar Minallah touched upon her documentary work, which strives for an end to discrimination against women.

Chair of Vital Voices board, Susan Davis, said Samar rightly deserved the 2012 Vital Voices Global Leadership Award since she has emerged as an extraordinary voice for women's rights in her country. She also thanked the Pakistani ambassador and praised her commitment to the cause of women's rights.

End.

We Pakistanis just can't seem to stand women empowerment which is probably why progressive parties like MQM and PPP are hated. Let me guess, women shouldn't be in government because it's vulgar?

PPP is hated for corruption and MQM is hated because the are the biggest terrorists involved in killing of thousands of innocent people and also taking Bhatta from people and also because of being traitors and their is huge difference in empowering and spreading vulgarity

(i) ‘when your affairs are in the hands of women then the lap of the earth is better for you then the back of the earth’
(ii) ‘when you see your leaders are immoral and wealthy people are misers and your affairs are entrusted with a woman then remember the lap of the earth is better then the back of the earth’.
Two Hadith relating to this matter, both weak, both about HEAD OF GOVERNMENT, not being in one

Also, this is only FOR HEAD OF GOVERNMENT and nothing else since Hazrat Aisha led her troops in the battle of the Camel

Very easily if she wants to actually. First of all, I never disputed their authenticity. They are weak but as a Muslim, I don't care if there is even less than 1% chance of it being real if it does not contradict the Quran, I will obey it. What I am saying is that it deals with head of government, not a ministerial position. Secondly, most ministers don't need to face the media, they can have a female assistant.
There are more Hadith I can bring forward if you want

Sir the kind of Hijab women have to do it is really hard for women to work but yes they can do many jobs like teaching Nursing and if Muslim land is attacked they have to fight also and also if they can do a job in which they don't have to deal with men a lot than they can do all sorts of Halal Jobs

I expected you will give this example which is the most misquoted example Sir first of all Hazrat Khadija's second husband died just a year ago secondly both her father and brother were alive and also the generation old servants of her husband and her were the one who used to deal in business and also take care of it she used to only get profits and details were told by them how much profit and loss was made
