New Delhi: Pakistan may nominate its High Commissioner to Britain Maleeha Lodhi for the UN secretary general’s post.

The Nation newspaper said Lodhi was selected as Pakistan’s candidate “after hectic consultations among the ruling circles.” The names of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, UN special envoy on HIV/AIDS Nafis Sadik and Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN Munir Akram also did the rounds.

“As for the names of Prime Minister Aziz and Ambassador Akram, it was all rumors but the candidature of Nafis Sadik was considered,” the paper quoted a senior official as saying. The three were dropped because of the age factor.

A well-known journalist, academician and diplomat, Lodhi has served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States. In 1994, Time magazine listed her as one of 100 global pacesetters and leaders who would define the 21st century.

Some media reports earlier suggested that Pakistan was unlikely to put up a candidate against Shashi Tharoor, India’s candidate for the post of UN secretary-general, but the official said the Government would work for Lodhi’s victory.

Dr Maleeha Lodhi is a very capable and competant person. Her appointment would be a good thing for Pakistan and the UN. However, we need to know how our allies would react to this appointment. We need the backing of the Arab world, which we might get. Dr. Lodhi has extensive contacts in the American Government. If US backs her she may make it. Whether it does is another conundrum the answer to which I dont have!
