Pakistan and India clash in U19 World Cup

BRISBANE: The quarter-final action in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Cricket World Cup begins on Sunday (today), with England taking on South Africa and hosts Australia meeting Bangladesh.

England lifted the Under-19 World Cup in 1998, while South Africa are yet to win their first title.

Defending champions Australia, who won the event in 1988, 2002 and 2010, start as favourites against Bangladesh, whose best previous performances were reaching the last eight in 2006 and 2008.

The winners of the Australia-Bangladesh match will meet either England or South Africa in the first semifinal on Tuesday.

However, all eyes will be on the India and Pakistan clash on Monday (tomorrow) at the Tony Ireland Stadium. India won the title in 2000 and 2008, while Pakistan won in 2004 and 2006.

New Zealand and West Indies will figure in the fourth and final quarter-final on Monday (tomorrow). Both sides have appeared in an Under-19 World Cup final but are yet to win it. New Zealand lost the final to England in 1998, while the West Indies lost to Pakistan in 2004.

The winners of the India-Pakistan and New Zealand-West Indies matches will play in the second semifinal on Thursday.

South Africa have won both their previous meetings against England in this tournament, while their opener Quinton de Kock is the leading run-getter with 226.

Talking about the India-Pakistan quarter-final clash, Indian skipper Unmukt Chand said: “Pakistan will be a challenge but we have worked hard on our skills coming into the tournament and also on the mental side of our game. We played Pakistan twice in Malaysia in June and learnt a lot from those matches. So we are confident that we can perform very well not only in the quarter-final but also in the rest of the matches.”

“We played India in the Asia Cup in Malaysia before this tournament and we won one (by one run) while the other game (the final) ended in a tie. There is always a tight contest between us and we are expecting nothing different this time,” said, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who is the second leading run-getter with 182.
