Pakistan to create commission to modernize police

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) Pakistan announced Monday it will form a commission to oversee and modernize its police service.

The National Public Safety Commission, comprising lawmakers and civilians, will watch the performance of police officers and recommend their premature transfer for ``unsatisfactory'' performance, said Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao, who heads the commission.

The 12-member commission will oversee the highway and railroad police departments as well as the Federal Investigation Agency, which is responsible for enforcing immigration laws and fighting corruption in government departments, Sherpao said at a news conference.

The commission is mandated to recommend the reform and modernization of police laws, prisons and probation services, he said.``I strongly believe that with the commission in place, the long-existing estrangement between the police and citizens will decrease,'' Sherpao said.(Posted @ 21:32 PST)

:disappointed: Strange but it would be good if that happens, im really sick of police force over there, perhaps they should think about their pay rise as well.

we have had such commissions before.....the solution is simple and doesnot need commissions as such........increased resource allocation to the force and recruitment of highly educated people only ( ban on anpar people---retire the anpar on golden handshakes ). Once the career in the Police starting from lowest constable to officers start to have dignified living ( good honourable pay and allowances )....their parasitic behaviour will change. However judicial corruption and inefficiency has to be tackled at the same time....without it...no matter how good police reforms....they would lose effect in a short time. Judiciary is responsible for holding all.....including Police to account. Once the society gives the police dignified living...it can expect same back from it....if not...then we can punish them severly using the powers of the judiciary.

1. increased resource allocation to the force and recruitment of highly educated people only ( ban on anpar people---retire the anpar on golden handshakes ).

2. ( good honourable pay and allowances )....their parasitic behaviour will change.

1. The existing resources are not being well used, that should be fixed before more is allocated. Remember there are many competiting activites that require resourcing such as hospitals, roads and schools.

2. Good pay will not solve behaivour, unacceptable behaivour must be solved with sackings and those who actually perform well must then be rewarded with extra pay bonus. Paying more and hoping for better performance is just a receipe for inflation in the nation as every public sector clamours for similar pay rise.

Pay must follow productivity increases, those in police force who increase their productivity must be rewarded, those who dont must remain on same compensation, and those who are corrupt and incompetent must be sacked.
