ABU DHABI: Pakistan plans to build at least three to four big reactors as it targets nuclear power capacity of 8,800 megawatts (MW) by 2030, the country’s atomic energy commission chairman said.

Pakistan has five small reactors in operation with combined capacity of just over 1300 MW. The last one in the four-reactor Chashma plant in Punjab province, built by China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC), went into operation in September this year.

It is also building two Chinese Hualong One reactors with a capacity of 1100 MW each near the port city of Karachi.

Muhammad Naeem, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, told Reuters these two new reactors are now 60 percent and 40 percent complete respectively and should become operational in 2020 and 2021.

Pakistan is now also in the final stages of awarding contracts for an eighth nuclear reactor with 1100 MW capacity which would take the country’s total nuclear capacity to about 5,000 MW when it is finished.

“We could award the contracts before year-end,” Naeem told Reuters on the sidelines of a nuclear conference in Abu Dhabi.

He declined to say how many contenders are in the race and whether non-Chinese bidders may be in the running.

Pakistan’s five operating reactors – including a tiny 125 MW Canadian-built reactor in Karachi in operation since 1972 – generate just five percent of the country’s electricity, with the rest coming from oil, gas and some hydropower.

With about one quarter of Pakistan’s population having no access to electricity, the government said late last year that it wants to boost nuclear capacity to 8,800 MW, or about 20 percent of power generation capacity, by 2030.

Naeem said Pakistan is looking at building at least three to four more big nuclear reactors before 2030 in order to reach that target.

“We have the plans in place, we are watching for proven technologies,” he said, adding that funding would come from the state budget and loans.

He did not specify whether countries other than China may be invited to bid.

Good news, and the non-Chinese vendors come as a surprise but to be honest Pakistan should stick with China for array of many reasons. Where were these other countries when Pakistan needed reactors built?
Anyway it certainly will be a great day when Pakistan can meet its energy needs.

How much radioactive waste do you think is created these days? Nuclear technology in use today is far ahead of those in the past, especially in the reduction of radioactive waste. The amount created is not going to overrun the country. You are thinking along the lines of Chernoybl.

Pakistan shouldn't put all its military eggs in one basket, same with its nuclear technology. Competition is healthy for the industry and will foster change and competitiveness.

Oh don't get me wrong mate, I'm with you. I'm just bringing past issues into this and reliability is a big concern. Pakistan had a rep as a nuclear proliferator and all these firms just turned their nose up at the country, aside the Chinese.

That risk can be mitigated...however the one thing that concerns me is the nuclear waste. In a country like Pak where ppl constantly cut corners to cut costs...I'm not sure how safely they will be containing the nuclear waste.

I dont agree that nuclear waste and accident risk should be deal breaker. However that being said. Nuclear energy is not cheap. Not at all. Its quite expensive and it as a solution to overcome energy needs is not advisable. Most countries that have substantial nuclear programs have those because of strategic needs.

Recent Chinese generation are some of the safest in standards ,the chances of earthquake on dams are more specially in Northern Areas ,major Nuke station will be most probably coastal .

I think China is technically on par or ahead of Europe in Nuclear technology and even UK's latest nuclear powerplant is being built by China so we should rather go for the latest generations nuclear power plants from China and get some ToT so we can build our own without the supervision of IAEA.
